Festivals and events worth timing your visit
Timket, celebrated in January, is the Ethiopian Orthodox Church's celebration of Epiphany. Priests parade the Tabot, a replica of the Ark of the Covenant, and there are public baptisms. Irreecha, in late September or early October, is a thanksgiving festival celebrated by the Oromo people. It involves colorful traditional attire, singing, and dancing at water bodies. Ethiopian Christmas, or Gena, falls on January 7th. It is a religious holiday marked by church services and family gatherings. The Meskel festival, in September, commemorates the discovery of the True Cross. Bonfires are lit, and processions take place.
