Festivals and events worth timing your visit
Nehru Trophy Boat Race happens on the second Saturday of August. This is a major snake boat race on Punnamada Lake and a huge tourist draw. Theyyam is a ritualistic dance performed in various temples from October to May. It showcases vibrant costumes and traditional music. Attukal Pongala is a ten-day festival in February/March at the Attukal Bhagavathy Temple. Thousands of women prepare Pongala, a rice dish, as an offering. Onam is a harvest festival in August/September. Alleppey celebrates it with cultural programs and traditional feasts.
