Pleasant weather (15β25Β°C), clear skies, perfect for sightseeing and outdoor activities. Snow melts, valleys turn green.
π Good Time (Shoulder Season)
Post-monsoon freshness, fewer crowds, lower prices. Autumn colours in October are spectacular.
β οΈ Avoid If Possible
Heavy monsoon rains, landslide risk, many roads and treks closed.
βοΈ Winter Season
Snowfall in higher elevations. Great for snow lovers and skiing (if applicable). Very cold β pack heavy woolens.
ποΈ Ladakh Through the Year
Ladakh experiences a short summer and long, harsh winter. From November to April, temperatures plummet well below freezing, often reaching -20Β°C. Roads are blocked by snow, cutting off access. Summer, from June to September, is the only time Ladakh is truly accessible. Temperatures range from 10Β°C to 25Β°C during the day. July and August see the most tourists. The shoulder months of May and October offer fewer crowds but cooler temperatures and potential road closures. The absolute best time to visit Ladakh is June to September when the weather is pleasant and all routes are open. Leh Airport (IXH) is the main airport.
Festivals and events worth timing your visit
Hemis Festival in June/July is Ladakh's largest monastic festival, featuring masked dances. Losar, the Tibetan New Year, falls in December/January with celebrations in monasteries and villages. Ladakh Festival in September showcases Ladakhi culture with music, dance, and archery. Sindhu Darshan Festival in June celebrates the Indus River as a symbol of unity. Phyang Tsedup Festival in July/August at Phyang Monastery includes masked dances and religious rituals.
What to pack
Pack layers of warm clothing for Ladakh's changeable weather. Thermal underwear, fleece jackets, and a windproof outer layer are essential. Sturdy waterproof trekking shoes are a must, especially if planning to hike. Sunglasses and sunscreen are crucial due to the high altitude and strong sun. A wide-brimmed hat will protect you from the sun. Remember basic medicines for altitude sickness.
Saving money
Flights and hotels are cheapest in May, October, and November, about 20-30% less than peak season. Look for guesthouses in Leh's Changspa area or homestays in villages for budget accommodations. Street food in Leh offers affordable and tasty meals. Consider shared taxis or local buses for transport between towns. Booking flights and accommodations 6 weeks in advance can save money.
