ποΈ Rohtang Pass Through the Year
Rohtang Pass is only open for tourism from around May to October due to heavy snowfall the rest of the year. From May to June, temperatures range from 10Β°C to 20Β°C, making it ideal for sightseeing and adventure activities before the monsoon arrives. July and August see heavy rainfall, making travel risky and potentially blocking the pass. September and October offer clear skies and cooler temperatures between 8Β°C to 15Β°C, with less tourist traffic. November to April experiences heavy snowfall and sub-zero temperatures, rendering the pass inaccessible. The best time to visit Rohtang Pass is either May-June or September-October for clear weather and open access.
Festivals and events worth timing your visit
There are no major festivals directly celebrated at Rohtang Pass itself due to its high altitude and seasonal accessibility. However, nearby Manali (nearest airport code KUU) hosts the Hadimba Devi Temple Festival in May, celebrating the local deity with cultural performances. Kullu Dussehra in October is another significant regional event, known for its grand procession of deities from various villages. Losar, the Tibetan New Year, usually falls in February/March and is celebrated by the local Buddhist community in the Lahaul and Spiti valleys, though accessing these areas via Rohtang Pass is not possible at that time.
What to pack
Pack layers of warm clothing, including thermal wear, a fleece jacket, and a waterproof windbreaker. Sturdy, waterproof trekking shoes are essential for navigating the uneven terrain and potential snow. Sunglasses are crucial to protect your eyes from the intense sun at high altitudes, along with sunscreen with high SPF. Carry gloves and a warm hat to protect against the cold winds. Remember to pack any necessary medications for altitude sickness and motion sickness. Dress modestly when visiting temples in nearby towns.
Saving money
The cheapest time to visit the Rohtang Pass area is generally in May or September, just before and after the peak tourist season. Flights and hotels in Manali can be 15-20% cheaper during these months compared to June and July. Look for guesthouses and homestays in areas slightly away from the main town of Manali for more affordable accommodation. Eating at local dhabas and smaller restaurants will save money compared to tourist-oriented restaurants. Booking flights and hotels 4-6 weeks in advance can also help secure better deals.
