Sandakphu experiences distinct seasons. March to May is spring, with rhododendrons and orchids blooming, and temperatures ranging from 8°C to 15°C. June to September is monsoon season; heavy rainfall makes trekking difficult and visibility poor. October and November offer clear skies and pleasant temperatures (5°C to 12°C), ideal for trekking and mountain views. December to February is winter, with temperatures dropping to -5°C to 5°C and occasional snowfall. The best time to visit Sandakphu is October-November for clear views of Kanchenjunga, or March-April for the rhododendron bloom.
Festivals and events worth timing your visit
While Sandakphu itself doesn't host major festivals, nearby towns do. Darjeeling, a few hours away, celebrates Losar (Tibetan New Year) in February/March with traditional dances and ceremonies. Buddha Jayanti in May is widely celebrated in the region's monasteries. The Teesta Tea & Tourism Festival in Darjeeling in November showcases local culture and tea production. These festivals provide cultural experiences for travellers visiting the Sandakphu region.
What to pack
For October-November, pack layers of warm clothing, including thermals, fleece jackets, and a windproof outer layer. Sturdy trekking shoes are essential for the rough terrain. Carry a waterproof backpack, rain cover, and a first-aid kit. Sunglasses and sunscreen are important even in colder months due to the high altitude. Remember to bring a power bank as electricity can be unreliable.
Saving money
October and November are peak season, so expect higher prices. For cheaper options, consider visiting in early March. Accommodation in Manebhanjan or Dhotrey is more affordable than directly at Sandakphu. Share jeeps to reduce transport costs. Carry snacks from Manebhanjan as food prices are higher at Sandakphu. Booking accommodation 4-6 weeks in advance is recommended, especially during peak season.
