ποΈ Siem Reap Through the Year
Siem Reap has a tropical monsoon climate with distinct wet and dry seasons. From November to March, the dry season brings pleasant temperatures ranging from 21Β°C to 32Β°C and low humidity, making it ideal for temple exploration. April and May are the hottest months, with temperatures soaring to 35Β°C-40Β°C. The monsoon season lasts from June to October, with heavy rainfall and humidity; temperatures during this time range from 24Β°C to 32Β°C. Expect occasional flooding in low-lying areas during the peak of the monsoon. The best time to visit Siem Reap is from December to February, when the weather is cool, dry, and sunny.
Festivals and events worth timing your visit
Khmer New Year (Choul Chnam Thmey) is celebrated in mid-April. This three-day festival involves temple visits, traditional games, and street celebrations. Water is splashed as a blessing for the new year. The Water Festival (Bon Om Touk) takes place in November. It marks the end of the monsoon season and celebrates the change of the river's flow. Boat races on the Siem Reap River are the highlight. Pchum Ben, the festival of the dead, is usually in September or October. Families pay respects to ancestors with offerings at pagodas. The Angkor International Film Festival is held in February or March. It showcases Southeast Asian films and attracts filmmakers and cinephiles.
What to pack
During the dry season (December to February), pack lightweight cotton and linen clothing to stay cool. Comfortable walking shoes are essential for exploring the temples. A hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen will protect you from the sun. If visiting temples, dress respectfully, covering shoulders and knees. A lightweight rain jacket or umbrella is useful during the rainy season (June to October). Mosquito repellent is important year-round. Don't forget a universal adapter for electronics.
Saving money
The low season, from May to September, offers the cheapest flights and hotel rates, sometimes 20-30% lower than peak season. Consider staying in guesthouses or budget hotels in the Old Market area or along Sivatha Road. Street food is widely available and affordable, especially around Pub Street and the night markets. A three-day Angkor Pass offers better value than single-day passes if you plan to visit multiple temples. Booking flights and accommodations 4-6 weeks in advance can also help secure better deals.
