Spiti Valley experiences a short summer and long, harsh winters. From November to May, temperatures plummet well below freezing, often reaching -20°C. Roads are usually blocked by snow, making access nearly impossible. Summer arrives in June, with temperatures rising to a pleasant 15-20°C during the day. July and August are the warmest months, but also bring some rainfall. September and October offer clear skies and cooler temperatures, ideal for trekking. The absolute best time to visit Spiti Valley is from June to October, when the weather is relatively mild and the roads are open.
Festivals and events worth timing your visit
The Ladarcha Fair takes place in Kaza in August. This fair brings traders from different regions to exchange goods and celebrate Spitian culture. The Pauri festival, held in Keylong in August, is another significant event featuring cultural performances and religious ceremonies. The Spiti Losar, or Tibetan New Year, usually falls in February or March, but access is difficult due to heavy snow. What to pack
For a summer trip to Spiti, pack layers. Days are warm, but evenings can be chilly. Include thermals, fleece jackets, and a windproof outer layer. Sturdy trekking shoes are essential if you plan to hike. Pack sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat to protect yourself from the strong sun at high altitude. Carry basic medicines for altitude sickness, headaches, and stomach upsets, as medical facilities are limited. Remember to carry extra batteries or a power bank as electricity can be unreliable.

The cheapest time to visit Spiti Valley is generally in early June or late September/early October, just outside the peak tourist season. Flights to Kullu-Manali Airport (KUU), the nearest airport, and accommodation can be 15-20% cheaper during these shoulder seasons.
