Festivals and events worth timing your visit
Brahmotsavam is a major festival celebrated in Tirumala, usually in September or October. This nine-day event features processions of Lord Venkateswara on different Vahanams (carriers) along with cultural performances. Vaikuntha Ekadasi, observed in December or January, is another significant event when the Vaikuntha Dwaram (the gate to Lord Vishnu's abode) is opened, and devotees believe that passing through it will lead to salvation. Rama Navami, in March or April, celebrates the birth of Lord Rama with special prayers and festivities. Hanuman Jayanti, in April or May, is dedicated to Lord Hanuman, with processions and prayers offered at the Anjanadri Hill, believed to be his birthplace.
What to pack
For a trip to Tirumala, pack light cotton clothing suitable for warm weather, even during the winter months. Comfortable walking shoes are essential as you will be doing a lot of walking, especially when queuing for darshan. Carry an umbrella or raincoat if visiting during the monsoon season. Remember to adhere to the temple's dress code: traditional Indian attire is preferred. Men should wear dhoti or pyjama with kurta, and women should wear saree or salwar kameez. Avoid wearing shorts, sleeveless tops, or revealing clothing. Do not forget to pack a small bag for carrying essentials inside the temple, as large bags are not allowed.
Saving money
The cheapest time to visit Tirumala is generally during the monsoon season (June to September), excluding festival periods. Hotel prices and flight tickets to the nearest airport (TIR) in Tirupati can be 15-20% lower during these months. Look for budget-friendly accommodations in Tirupati, which is at the base of the hill, and utilize the frequent and affordable bus services to reach Tirumala. Free meals are provided by the temple trust, which can help reduce food costs. Booking accommodation and travel tickets 4-6 weeks in advance can also help secure better deals.
