Amaravati Amaralingeswara Swamy Temple 2026: Complete Darshan, Pancharama Yatra & Travel Guide

Amaravati is one of India’s most historically layered pilgrimage towns — a place where a 2,000-year-old Buddhist stupa sits adjacent to one of Andhra Pradesh’s most sacred Shiva temples, all on the banks of the Krishna River. The Sri Amaralingeswara Swamy Temple (also called Amareswara Temple or Amararama) is one of the five Pancharama Kshetras — five legendary Shiva temples in Andhra Pradesh where fragments of the demon Tarakasura’s Lingam fell after Lord Kumara Swamy (Kartikeya) shattered it in battle. This temple houses a remarkable 15-foot white marble Shiva Lingam whose base is not visible and whose Abhishekam must be performed from an upper floor due to its height. For devotees on the Pancharama Yatra or anyone traveling through coastal Andhra Pradesh, Amaravati is a deeply rewarding stop. Whether you’re coming from Vijayawada, Hyderabad, or abroad, this guide covers everything for your 2026 visit.

About the Temple

The Sri Amaralingeswara Swamy Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva as Amareswara and his consort Goddess Bala Chamundika. According to the Skanda Purana, when the gods (Amaras) were defeated by Tarakasura at Varanasi, they fled and took refuge here. Lord Shiva appeared to defeat the demons, and because the gods resided here, the place became Amaravati — “the abode of the immortals.”

Another legend states that Lord Indra installed the Shiva Lingam here. The most fascinating story involves the Lingam itself: it is said that the 15-foot white marble Lingam was growing continuously, and to stop its growth, a nail was driven into it. A red mark on top of the Lingam is believed to be the bloodstain from that nailing — visible to this day.

The temple was patronised by the Satavahanas, Eastern Chalukyas, Kota chiefs, and the Vijayanagara Empire (inscriptions from the 11th to 16th century CE are found on walls). In the 19th century, Vasireddy Venkatadri Naidu, the zamindar of Chintapalli, spent his personal fortune to expand and renovate the temple into its present grand form.

The architecture is Dravidian style with four imposing gopurams on all four sides. The temple is built on a small hillock called Krouncha Shaila. The complex has three concentric circles: the outer circle houses shrines of Mahishasura Mardini, Veerabhadraswamy, Omkareswara, and Guru Dattatreya; the second circle contains Vinayaka, Kalabhairava, Anjaneya, and Kumaraswamy temples; and the innermost circle has the main sanctum with the towering Shiva Lingam.

Darshan Timings

Morning: 6:00 AM – 1:00 PM
Evening: 4:00 PM – 8:30 PM

(Timings extend during Maha Shivaratri, Brahmotsavams, and Kartika Purnima.)

Darshan is free. Queue time: 30 min–1 hour, less on weekdays.

The Unique Abhishekam

Because the Shiva Lingam is 15 feet tall, the Abhishekam (sacred bathing ritual with milk, water, and other offerings) is performed from an upper-floor platform above the Lingam. This is unlike any other Shiva temple in India. Watching the priests pour offerings from above onto the massive white marble Lingam while chanting mantras is extraordinary. Book Abhishekam through the temple office.

Pancharama Kshetra Yatra

Amaravati is one of five Pancharama Kshetras — five Shiva temples where fragments of Tarakasura’s Lingam fell:

1. Amararama — Amaravati (this temple)
2. Draksharama — Draksharamam, East Godavari
3. Kumararama — Kotipalli/Samarlakota
4. Bheemarama — Samalkota
5. Ksheerarama — Palakollu, West Godavari

Many devotees complete the entire circuit in 2–3 days by car through the Godavari delta.

What to See in Amaravati

Amaravati Buddhist Stupa (Mahachaitya): Adjacent to the temple. One of India’s most important Buddhist monuments, built during the Satavahana dynasty (2nd–3rd century CE). Though much of the original stupa was dismantled in the 19th century (sculptures now in the British Museum and Chennai Museum), the archaeological site and remaining panels are still impressive. A small on-site museum displays artefacts. This dual Hindu-Buddhist heritage makes Amaravati unique.

Dharanikota: Ancient capital of the Satavahana dynasty, 3 km from Amaravati. Excavations have revealed fort walls, Buddhist relics, and Roman-era coins.

Krishna River Ghats: Peaceful, especially at sunrise and sunset. Many devotees take a holy dip before darshan.

Undavalli Caves: 40 km towards Vijayawada. Stunning 4th–5th century rock-cut caves with a massive reclining Vishnu sculpture.

Accommodation & Food

Amaravati: Temple guest houses + limited hotels (₹500–2,000/night). Vijayawada (46 km) has many more options: ₹800–6,000/night. Most visitors stay in Vijayawada and day-trip to Amaravati.

Food: Classic Andhra vegetarian meals near the temple: rice, sambar, pappu, pachadi, avakaya. Restaurants in Guntur are famous for fiery Guntur chilli dishes. Thali meals: ₹80–200.

Best Time to Visit

October–February: Best weather (18–30°C). Maha Shivaratri (Feb/Mar) is the grandest festival. Brahmotsavams (February) feature multi-day celebrations with Vahana Sevas and Kalyanotsavam. Kartika Purnima (November) brings special lamp offerings.

Practical Tips

Combine with Vijayawada: Amaravati + Kanaka Durga Temple + Mangalagiri + Undavalli Caves = excellent 2-day AP pilgrimage from Vijayawada.

Pancharama Yatra: Start from Amaravati, proceed east through Godavari delta. 2–3 days by car.

Buddhist heritage: Don’t skip the Mahachaitya stupa site. Amaravati was one of ancient India’s greatest Buddhist centres.

Krishna River dip: Ghats are accessible near the temple. Many devotees bathe before darshan.

Stay in Vijayawada: Better hotels, food, and connectivity. Day-trip to Amaravati is easy.
