A private pool changes how a holiday feels. You walk out of the bedroom in a robe, not in your swimwear hoping no one is around. You order a drink and nobody else hears the order. Kids splash without you apologising to the next sun lounger over. The water belongs to your villa for the length of your stay, and that is the whole point.
India has plenty of properties that get this right. The prices range from achievable weekend rates in Coorg or Lonavala to once-a-year splurges in Udaipur and the Andamans. Here are fifteen we think are worth the booking, with the actual locations, airport distances, and what is around them so you can plan the rest of the trip.

Kerala & Karnataka
01
Number One
SpiceTree Munnar
Chinnakkanal, Kerala
A solar-heated infinity pool on a private deck, the only one of its kind in Munnar.
Location
Muttukad-Periakanal Road, Chinnakkanal, Idukki district. About 23 km from Munnar town, 110 km from Cochin International Airport (a 3.5 hour drive through tea country) and 130 km from Aluva railway station.
The Distinction
Perched between Kannan Devan Hills and Bison Valley at roughly 5,500 feet, the property only has a handful of pool villas, so it never feels busy. Inside the villa, you get a Victorian copper bathtub, a master bedroom with floor-to-ceiling glass, and a small private dining area. Mornings here have clouds drifting below your balcony.
Around You
Anayirangal Dam (15 minutes drive, boat rides on a reservoir surrounded by tea plantations), Chinnakkanal Waterfalls (6 km), Kolukkumalai Tea Estate (9 km, claimed to be the world's highest tea estate at around 7,900 feet), Eravikulam National Park (35 km, home to the endangered Nilgiri Tahr), and the tea museum and shops of Munnar town. Honeymooners often pair this with a backwater stay in Alleppey or Kumarakom on the way back.
02
Number Two
Taj Bekal Resort & Spa
Kasaragod, Kerala
Where the Kappil River and the Arabian Sea meet on the same property.
Location
Kappil Beach, Kasaragod district, North Kerala. Roughly 70 to 80 km from Mangalore International Airport (about 1.5 hours by road) and 16 km from Kasaragod railway station. The Konkan Railway line runs right through this stretch, so trains from Mumbai and Goa are an option.
The Distinction
A 26-acre property where the river flows through the resort and the sea is on the other side, so you have backwaters and a beach within walking distance. The Heritage Villas have private courtyards and plunge pools, with architecture inspired by traditional Kerala kettuvallam houseboats. There is a guest infinity pool that runs along the lawn and a serious Jiva spa. North Kerala is much less touristy than the Alleppey side.
Around You
Bekal Fort (7 km, the largest fort in Kerala, built in the 17th century and right on the beach), Bekal Beach Park, Pallikere Beach, Kappil Beach (walking distance), Ananthapura Lake Temple (the only lake temple in Kerala, around 30 km), and the Theyyam ritual performances of north Kerala if you visit between October and May.
03
Number Three
Kumarakom Lake Resort
Vembanad, Kerala
A meandering pool runs through the grounds like a small canal.
Location
On the eastern bank of Lake Vembanad in Kumarakom village, Kottayam district. 72 to 85 km from Cochin International Airport depending on the route (about 2 to 2.5 hours by car), 14 km from Kottayam town, and 15 km from Kottayam railway station. You can also arrive by speedboat across the lake from Muhamma jetty.
The Distinction
Spread over 25 acres along Lake Vembanad. The Presidential Villas and Heritage Villas come with private pools and Jacuzzis. The infinity pool on the lake edge is the postcard shot most guests post. Ayurmana, the in-house Ayurveda spa, is one of the better ones in Kerala.
Around You
Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary (14 acres, best at dawn for herons, darters and Siberian storks during winter migration), Kumarakom Beach, Pathiramanal Island (boat trip), Vembanad Lake houseboat cruises (the resort can arrange a private one), and the village of Kumarakom itself. Many guests pair this with a couple of days in Alleppey or Munnar.
04
Number Four
Carmelia Haven
Vandanmedu, Thekkady, Kerala
Plunge pool villas tucked among cardamom bushes and pepper vines.
Location
Vandanmedu village, Idukki district, around 25 km from Thekkady town and Periyar Tiger Reserve. About 110 km from Madurai Airport in Tamil Nadu and 150 km from Cochin Airport. Sits at roughly 4,000 feet on the Western Ghats.
The Distinction
A 55-acre working tea and cardamom plantation with eco-friendly construction throughout. The Plunge Pool Villas and Jacuzzi Villas are the rooms to book, set among cardamom bushes and pepper vines with a private hot tub or plunge pool. There are also tree houses and even a cave room if you have travel companions who want something different. Vandanmedu is the world's largest producer of cardamom, and the property is in the middle of it.
Around You
Periyar Tiger Reserve and Periyar Lake (25 km, famous for elephant boat safaris), Spices Park Puttady (6 km), Chellarkovil Waterfalls (12 km), Kailasam (the resort's own 1,500-acre annex 22 km away for treks and jungle activities), and the spice markets of Kumily. Pair this with a stay in Munnar or Alleppey for a classic Kerala loop.
05
Number Five
Evolve Back Coorg
Siddapura, Karnataka
A 300-acre working coffee and spice plantation, each villa its own private courtyard.
Location
Siddapura, Coorg district, Karnataka. 235 km from Bangalore Airport (about 4.5 hours), 110 km from Mysore Airport (2 hours, smaller airport), 75 km from Kannur Airport in Kerala (2 hours, often the easiest option for South Indian travellers), and 195 km from Mangalore Airport.
The Distinction
A working coffee and spice plantation at around 800 metres above sea level. Two villa categories matter for pool seekers. The Lily Pool Villas are plantation-style with white-washed mud walls, high ceilings and thatched roofs, each with its own pool tucked into a private courtyard. The Heritage Pool Villas are Kodava architecture, with red laterite stone walls and dark wood interiors. Lily Pool Bungalows (two bedrooms) work for families. The infinity pool overlooking the paddy fields is the bonus.
Around You
Dubare Elephant Camp (on the Cauvery River, 15 km, where you can interact with retired forest department elephants), Madikeri Fort and town (32 km), Abbey Falls (49 km from the resort, 8 km from Madikeri), Raja's Seat sunset point (in Madikeri), and Bylakuppe (around 35 km, the second-largest Tibetan settlement outside Tibet, with the Namdroling Monastery and its 40-foot golden Buddha statues).
06
Number Six
The IBNII
Madikeri, Coorg
Pools held at 27 to 29 degrees, because Coorg evenings get cold.
Location
Madikeri, Coorg, around 5 km from Madikeri town centre. About 275 km from Bangalore Airport (5.5 hours), 160 km from Mangalore Airport (about 3 hours), and 130 km from Mysore Airport.
The Distinction
Smaller and more boutique than Evolve Back, with around 22 private pool villas spread across 125 acres of regenerated forest. The Kopi Luwak Premium Villas have temperature-controlled pools held between 27 and 29°C, which matters because Coorg evenings in December and January get genuinely cold. The Arnetta Premium Cottages have private Jacuzzis instead of pools. Eco-luxury is the angle and they take it seriously, with rainwater harvesting and biogas.
Around You
Madikeri Fort (5 km, built in the 17th century by Mudduraja and later renovated by Tipu Sultan), Raja's Seat (5 km, sunset point with terraced gardens), Abbey Falls (8 km, 70-foot falls amid coffee plantations and a hanging bridge viewpoint), Omkareshwara Temple, Talakaveri (the birthplace of the Kaveri river, around 45 km), and the Kodava cultural villages around Madikeri.
07
Number Seven
Taj Exotica Resort & Spa
Havelock Island, Andamans
The only true luxury property in the Andamans, on one of Asia's most beautiful beaches.
Location
Radhanagar Beach (Beach No. 7) on Havelock Island in the Andaman archipelago. Reaching it requires a flight to Port Blair (IXZ, also called Veer Savarkar International Airport, direct flights from Chennai, Kolkata, Mumbai, Delhi and Bengaluru) and then a ferry of around 2 to 2.5 hours to Havelock. Many travellers spend a night in Port Blair before crossing.
The Distinction
Spread across roughly 46 acres on Radhanagar Beach. Villas sit on stilts with thatched roofs inspired by traditional indigenous dwellings, and from Premium category upwards, each villa has its own private plunge pool. The two-bedroom family villas get a full 15-metre pool overlooking landscaped gardens. The property was built without cutting a single tree.
Around You
Radhanagar Beach (the resort backs onto it), Kalapathar Beach (10 km, the sunrise spot), Elephant Beach (best snorkelling and scuba on the island), Neil Island (around an hour by ferry, quieter and more local), Cellular Jail in Port Blair (the colonial-era prison turned museum, worth a half-day on your return through), and dive operations at Havelock for some of India's best diving and reef snorkelling.

The Distinction
56 acres of landscaped grounds along the unspoilt Benaulim beach. Mediterranean-style colonial architecture rather than the standard Goan look. Number Nine
Azaya Beach Resort
Cavelossim, South Goa
Two sun decks, a personal bar, a private pool. And a floating breakfast.

Cavelossim, South Goa, on Mobor Beach where the Sal River meets the Arabian Sea. About 36 km from Dabolim airport (45 to 60 minutes) and 65 km from Mopa airport. Margao railway station is 16 km away.
The Distinction
The Premium Pool Villas here are larger than most beach villas in the same price band, with two sun decks, an oversized personal bar, a spacious living area and a private pool. Floating breakfasts in the pool are a signature here, which works well for honeymoons and anniversaries. A more relaxed pace and a younger feel than Taj Exotica.
Around You
Mobor Beach (right outside), Cavelossim Beach, Sal River backwater cruises (sometimes with dolphin sightings), Holy Trinity Church Cavelossim, Macaranne Hill viewpoint, Cabo de Rama Fort (27 km), and the more touristy beaches of Colva and Benaulim to the north. The Saturday night market at Arpora is up in North Goa, around 60 km away.

The Distinction
Casa Sea Vista and Casa Sea Esta, each with its own private pool, a rooftop yoga shala, an outdoor Jacuzzi (Casa Sea Esta), a private gym, and a flower garden. Candolim Beach (walking distance), Sinquerim Beach and the Aguada Fort ruins, Fort Aguada Lighthouse (5 km), Calangute and Baga (the busier beaches, 5 to 7 km north), Anjuna and Vagator (10 to 12 km, for nightlife and the flea market), Old Goa churches (around 20 km, including Basilica of Bom Jesus and Se Cathedral), and Panjim's Latin Quarter Fontainhas. For dining, the main Candolim strip with Bomras, Chef's Pakeezah and the Souza Lobo lineage is a short tuk-tuk ride away.

Number Eleven
The Oberoi Udaivilas
Lake Pichola, Udaipur
Private pools facing the Aravallis, the lake, and the City Palace across the water.
Location
Haridasji Ki Magri, on the western bank of Lake Pichola in Udaipur. About 24 km from Maharana Pratap Airport (Dabok, UDR, around 40 minutes) and 5 km from Udaipur railway station. Guests are often picked up by boat across Lake Pichola, which is the right way to arrive.
The Distinction
30 acres of gardens with around 40 percent set aside as a small wildlife sanctuary where peacocks wander freely. The Luxury Suites and Kohinoor Suite come with private pools facing the lake, the hills and the City Palace. Some Premier Rooms get a semi-private temperature-controlled pool shared between a small cluster. The two-bedroom Kohinoor Suite is essentially its own walled palace with its own pool, regularly used by royal families and senior corporate guests for special occasions.

On the eastern bank of Lake Pichola, about 450 metres from City Palace by road and a 6-minute walk from Ambrai Ghat. 24 km from Udaipur Airport (about 40 minutes) and 4 km from the railway station. Closer to the old city than Udaivilas.
The Distinction
80 rooms in a modern palace-style hotel that opened in 2009. The Lake Villas and Maharaja Suite feature private temperature-controlled pools and Jacuzzis facing the lake. The Grande Heritage Garden View Private Pool Room is the entry point with an actual private pool, and even that one is larger than most hotel suites. The lake view from every room on the lake-facing side is genuinely uninterrupted.
Around You
City Palace (5-minute walk), Crystal Gallery (in Fateh Prakash Palace), Lake Pichola boat rides at sunset (the boats leave from Rameshwar Ghat), Bagore ki Haveli for the Dharohar folk dance show, Jagdish Temple, Gangaur Ghat, the bazaars of the old city for miniature paintings and silver work, and Ahar Cenotaphs (10 minutes drive, royal cremation memorials).

The Distinction
The 18th-century temple still has daily chanting at dawn. The Luxury Villas with Private Pool are 522 square metres including the pool, patio and garden, with a sunken marble bath, a king bedroom and a private al fresco dining area. The lime plaster walls match the pink of old Jaipur and the construction follows traditional techniques. The two-bedroom Kohinoor Pool Villa is the top suite, a small fort in its own right.

SaffronStays & Private Rentals
Pan-India
The whole villa. No hotel lobby, no shared spaces, no neighbours.
Location
Pick your region. SaffronStays alone has more than 30 villas in Coorg and similar numbers in North Goa (Assagao, Siolim, Vagator, Anjuna) and Lonavala-Karjat-Igatpuri.
The Distinction
If you would rather skip hotels entirely, the private rental villa market in India has matured a lot. Three and four-bedroom villas with their own heated pools, full kitchens, BBQ setups and dedicated caretakers run anywhere from twenty thousand to a lakh per night depending on size, location and season. SaffronStays, AirBnB, StayVista and Vista Rooms are the main inventory sources. Useful for groups of friends, family weddings, or extended families who want to host meals on their own time.
Around You
Whichever region you pick. North Goa rentals around Assagao put you within 10 minutes of Anjuna, Vagator and the cafe-and-design scene at Siolim. Coorg rentals scatter you across coffee estates with the same attractions as IBNII or Evolve Back. Lonavala rentals give you access to all the Western Ghats viewpoints and forts, with the privacy to host a gathering of 10 to 15 people if you book the right size.
The Editor's Notes
How to pick the right one
i.
On heated and unheated pools
This matters more than people think. A private pool in Coorg or Munnar in December is unswimmable unless the water is heated. The IBNII Coorg specifically calls out 27 to 29°C pool temperatures for this reason. Always ask before booking. Do not assume the pictures match the season you are travelling in.
ii.
How private is private
Some private pools are walled compounds with high boundaries (Oberoi Rajvilas, Evolve Back Heritage Pool Villas, Taj Exotica Andaman). Others are pools on a deck that may be partly visible from a neighbouring villa (SpiceTree Munnar, some Goa Premium Pool Villas). Read recent reviews on Tripadvisor or Booking.com to be sure, since marketing photos always show the most flattering angle.
iii.
On floating breakfasts
Most luxury pool villas now offer floating breakfasts as an add-on, ranging from two thousand to seven thousand rupees over the regular meal. Worth it once if you are travelling for a special occasion. Skip it on a repeat stay.
iv.
Maintenance and cleaning hours
A pool that gets cleaned at peak afternoon hours is annoying. Ask if cleaning happens in the early morning or late evening when you are unlikely to be in the water.
v.
Season and pricing
Rajasthan works best from October to March. Kerala and Goa are December to February for peak weather and price. Coorg works almost year round, but monsoon (June to September) is dramatic, misty and not pool weather. The Andamans peak from December to April. Off-peak rates can be 40 to 60 percent lower at the same properties.
vi.
For families
The two-bedroom family villas at Taj Exotica Andamans, the Lily Pool Bungalows at Evolve Back Coorg and the bigger SaffronStays villas in Lonavala or Coorg are properly designed for children. The compact one-bedroom plunge pool villas in Goa or Udaipur are not, no matter how good the photos look.
Getting There
Flights
Goa, Udaipur, Jaipur, Kochi and Port Blair all have direct flights from major Indian cities. Coorg needs a flight into Bengaluru, Kannur or Mangalore and then a drive. Munnar means Kochi and then a 3.5 hour drive. The Andamans require a flight into Port Blair and a ferry to Havelock.

One Last Note
On booking
Private pool villas almost always sell out earliest for December and the long weekends. If you are planning a honeymoon or anniversary at one of the Oberoi or Taj properties, book three to four months ahead, and ask for a corner villa or one furthest from the lobby. The difference in noise between a corner unit and a middle one is more than you would expect.
