Vijayawada — the “City of Victory” — is the spiritual heart of Andhra Pradesh, and its two most powerful temples make a perfect combined pilgrimage: the Kanaka Durga Temple on Indrakeeladri Hill overlooking the Krishna River, and the Panakala Narasimha Swamy Temple at Mangalagiri, just 12 km away, where the deity’s open mouth miraculously consumes half the jaggery water (Panakam) offered by devotees. One temple is dedicated to the fierce Goddess who slayed Mahishasura; the other to the fierce half-man, half-lion avatar of Vishnu who slayed Namuchi. Together, they represent the full spectrum of divine protection — Shakti and Vishnu — in one compact pilgrimage circuit that can be completed in a single day.
Kanaka Durga Temple, Vijayawada
About the Temple
The Sri Durga Malleswara Swamy Varla Devasthanam — better known as the Kanaka Durga Temple — sits atop Indrakeeladri Hill on the banks of the Krishna River. It is one of the 18 Maha Shakti Peethas in India. The deity — Goddess Kanaka Durga — is Swayambhu (self-manifested) and considered exceptionally powerful. The 4-foot-tall idol shows the eight-armed goddess standing over the demon king Mahishasura, piercing him with her trident — an image of extraordinary beauty and strength.
According to legend, Arjuna performed penance on this hill to Lord Shiva and received the Pasupatastra (the most powerful divine weapon). Lord Shiva called Arjuna “Vijaya” (victorious), and the city was named Vijayawada — the “City of Victory.” Arjuna is believed to have built the first shrine to Goddess Durga here. The temple has been expanded by the Chalukya kings (10th–12th century), and Adi Shankaracharya is said to have installed the Sri Chakra here.
A unique feature of Kanaka Durga is that the goddess is adorned in nine different forms throughout the year: Sri Mahalakshmi, Sri Saraswati, Sri Bala Tripura Sundari, Sri Rajarajeshwari, Sri Mahisasura Mardhini, Sri Durga Devi, Sri Annapurna Devi, Sri Gayathri Devi, and Sri Lalitha Tripura Sundari. This variety of alankarams (decorations) is unique to this temple.

Dussehra/Navaratri
The Dussehra celebrations at Kanaka Durga Temple are among the grandest in South India. For 10 days during Navaratri (September/October), the goddess is adorned in a different avatar each day. Lakhs of devotees visit. Special pujas, cultural performances, and the grand Teppotsavam (float festival) on the Krishna River are highlights. The entire Indrakeeladri hill is illuminated. Book accommodation and plan darshan well in advance during Navaratri.
Mangalagiri Panakala Narasimha Swamy Temple
About the Temple
Mangalagiri means “The Auspicious Hill” — named because Goddess Lakshmi performed penance here. The hill is shaped like an elephant and is one of the 8 Mahakshetrams where Lord Vishnu manifested himself. There are three Narasimha temples on this hill:
1. Panakala Narasimha Swamy Temple (mid-hill) — The main attraction. The deity is Swayambhu and appears only as a wide-open mouth covered by a metal face. This is where the famous Panakam offering happens.
2. Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Temple (foot of the hill) — A grand temple with a 153-foot gopuram (one of the tallest in South India), built by Vasireddy Venkatadri Naidu in 1807–09. The deity was installed by Yudhishthira (eldest Pandava).
3. Gandala Narasimha Swamy Temple (hilltop) — No idol, only a lamp is lit with ghee for liberation from suffering.
The Panakam Miracle
This is the temple’s most extraordinary feature and found nowhere else in the world. Devotees offer Panakam — a mixture of jaggery water, cardamom, and pepper — by pouring it into the deity’s wide-open mouth. Exactly half the Panakam is consumed by the deity (a gurgling sound is audible), and the remaining half flows back as prasadam for the devotee. Despite vast quantities of sweet liquid being poured daily, not a single ant or fly can be found anywhere near the temple. This phenomenon has been observed for centuries and defies explanation.
In different Yugas, the Lord accepted different offerings: nectar in Krita Yuga, ghee in Treta Yuga, milk in Dvapara Yuga, and Panakam (jaggery water) in the current Kali Yuga.
Darshan Timings
Panakala Swamy Temple (hill): 7:00 AM – 3:00/4:00 PM only. Closed in the evenings — the belief is that gods and sages come to worship after sunset.
Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy (foot): 5:00 AM – 12:30 PM & 4:00 PM – 8:30 PM.
Nijaroopa Darshan: 6:00 AM on every Ekadashi day — the deity is shown without the mukuta (crown), revealing the true form. Very special experience.
