Kashmir doesn't need a marketing pitch. The Himalayas, the houseboats, the saffron fields, the Mughal gardens — it sells itself. What it does need is a practical guide that tells you what things actually cost, when to go, and how to avoid the tourist traps that inflate your budget by 40%.
This is that guide. Everything you need for a Kashmir trip in 2026.
Getting to Kashmir
Fly into Sheikh ul-Alam International Airport, Srinagar (SXR). Direct flights from Delhi (1.5 hrs), Mumbai (2.5 hrs), Bengaluru (3 hrs), Hyderabad, Kolkata, Chandigarh, Lucknow, and Ahmedabad.
Flight prices fluctuate sharply by season. Delhi to Srinagar return fares range from ₹5,000 in winter to ₹15,000+ in peak summer (May–June). Book 6–8 weeks ahead for the best prices.

Alternative entry: Fly to Jammu (IXJ) and drive to Srinagar via the Jammu–Srinagar Highway (270 km, 8–10 hours). This is cheaper but the highway is prone to closures due to landslides, especially in monsoon.
Best Time to Visit Kashmir
| Season | Months | What You Get | Budget Impact |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spring | Mar–Apr | Tulip Festival (Asia's largest, Srinagar Tulip Garden), melting snow, gardens blooming | Moderate |
| Peak Summer | May–Jun | Best weather (20–30°C), all areas accessible, Mughal gardens in full bloom | Most expensive |
| Monsoon | Jul–Sep | Rain, landslides possible, fewer tourists. Lush green valleys. | Cheapest |
| Autumn | Oct–Nov | Golden chinar trees, crisp air, clear skies. Best photography season. | Moderate–Low |
| Winter | Dec–Feb | Snow everywhere, skiing in Gulmarg, frozen Dal Lake. Some roads closed. | Low (except Dec 25–Jan 1) |
Best value months: Late March (Tulip Festival + low prices) and October (autumn colours + empty hotels). Avoid the May 15–June 15 window — that's when every Indian family is in Kashmir and prices spike 50–80%.
The Kashmir Circuit: 4 Destinations
1. Srinagar — The Cultural Heart
Stay: 2–3 nights. A Dal Lake houseboat stay is non-negotiable — it's the defining Kashmir experience. Budget houseboats start at ₹2,000/night; deluxe ones with carved walnut interiors cost ₹5,000–10,000.
Must do: Shikara ride at sunset (₹500–700 for 1 hour), Mughal Gardens (Shalimar Bagh, Nishat Bagh), old city walk through Jama Masjid area, saffron shopping at Lal Chowk.
Eat: Wazwan thali (Kashmiri feast — Rogan Josh, Yakhni, Gushtaba). Try it at Ahdoos or Mughal Darbar. Budget ₹400–800 per person for a proper Wazwan.

2. Gulmarg — The Adventure Capital
Stay: 1–2 nights. Distance from Srinagar: 52 km (1.5 hours by car).
The Gondola: Gulmarg Gondola is the world's second-highest cable car. Phase 1 goes to Kongdoori (₹740). Phase 2 goes to Apharwat Peak at 4,200m (₹900). Phase 2 is where the real views are — snow-capped peaks stretching to Pakistan. Book tickets online at 10am the day before — they sell out fast in summer.
Winter special: Gulmarg is India's best skiing destination. Season runs December–March. Beginner lessons available from ₹2,000/day.
Budget alert: Many tour packages exclude Gondola tickets. Always check if Phase 1 and Phase 2 are included — this alone costs ₹1,640 per person.
3. Pahalgam — The Peaceful Valley
Stay: 2 nights. Distance from Srinagar: 95 km (2.5 hours).
Must do: Betaab Valley (named after the Bollywood film — ₹100 entry), Aru Valley (gateway to the Kolahoi Glacier trek), Chandanwari (snow point even in summer). Pony rides to Baisaran meadow ₹800–1,200.
Important: Pahalgam has a union taxi system. You must hire local union cabs (not your Srinagar driver) for sightseeing within Pahalgam. Cost: ₹2,500–3,500 per day depending on the route. This catches many tourists off-guard — budget for it.
Budget tip: Walk the Lidder River trail instead of paying for pony rides everywhere. It's flat, scenic, and free.
4. Sonamarg — The Meadow of Gold
Stay: Day trip from Srinagar (80 km, 2.5 hours) or overnight.
Must do: Pony ride or trek to Thajiwas Glacier (₹1,500–2,000 return by pony, or free if you trek). The drive itself — alongside the Sindh River through pine forests — is one of the most scenic road trips in India.
Note: Sonamarg is a gateway to the Zoji La Pass and Ladakh. If you have extra days, the Srinagar–Leh highway via Sonamarg is a legendary road trip (2 days, opens June–October).

Practical Tips
- Hire a private car from Srinagar for the whole trip. Rate: ₹2,500–3,500/day for an Innova with driver. This is far more convenient than relying on shared transport. Negotiate a fixed rate for 6 days covering the entire Srinagar–Gulmarg–Pahalgam circuit.
- Houseboat scams exist. Book verified houseboats through the J&K Tourism Department website or ask for DTHC (Department of Tourism Houseboat Category) registration. Never book from touts at the airport.
- Saffron shopping: Buy from government emporiums (J&K Handicrafts/Handloom on the Boulevard) — tourist shops often mix saffron with safflower to inflate weight.
- Gulmarg Gondola tickets: Book Phase 2 online the day before at the official Gulmarg Gondola website. Walk-up queues in summer can be 2–3 hours.
- Pahalgam union cabs: This is a fixed system — prices are posted at the union stand. Don't try to negotiate below posted rates; it won't work. Budget ₹2,500–3,500 for the full Betaab–Aru–Chandanwari circuit.
- ATMs are sparse outside Srinagar. Carry enough cash for Gulmarg, Pahalgam, and Sonamarg. UPI works at larger hotels and restaurants but not everywhere.
- Security: Kashmir is safe for tourists in 2026. All the tourist circuits (Srinagar–Gulmarg–Pahalgam–Sonamarg) are well-patrolled and millions of tourists visit annually. Follow local advisories and avoid areas near the Line of Control.
