Manali doesn't need an introduction. It's India's default answer to "let's go somewhere." And for good reason — snow-capped peaks, pine forests, river rafting, paragliding, and chai at a cliff-edge cafe in Old Manali. It works for honeymooners, backpackers, families, and friend groups. It works in summer, winter, and (controversially) even in monsoon.
This guide covers everything you need to plan a Manali trip in 2026 — not the generic "visit Hadimba Temple" fluff, but the stuff that actually matters: when Rohtang opens, how the permit system works, whether to fly to Bhuntar or Chandigarh, real budgets, and three complete itineraries.
When to Visit Manali
Manali has four distinct seasons, and each delivers a different trip:
- March–June (Summer): The sweet spot. Temperatures between 10–25°C. Rohtang Pass reopens mid-May (after snow clearance). Solang Valley is fully operational for paragliding and adventure sports. This is peak tourist season — prices are highest, crowds are real, book everything early.
- July–September (Monsoon): Heavy rainfall, landslides are common, and roads can get blocked. Rohtang typically closes. Not recommended unless you specifically want the lush green monsoon landscape and are okay with disrupted plans.
- October–November (Autumn): Crowds thin out, weather is crisp and clear, and the landscape turns golden. Great for photography and peaceful trips. Rohtang may start closing by late October.
- December–February (Winter): Sub-zero temperatures, heavy snowfall, Rohtang fully closed. But Solang Valley becomes a skiing destination, and Manali covered in snow is genuinely magical. Perfect for couples who want the snow experience without going to Ladakh.
Best time for most travellers: April–June. Best time for budget travellers: late September–October (off-peak, good weather, lower prices).
How to Reach Manali
By Air
The nearest airport is Bhuntar Airport (KUU), 50 km from Manali. Air India operates flights from Delhi. However, Bhuntar has a small runway, flights are weather-dependent and frequently cancelled, and fares are expensive in peak season.
Better option: Fly to Chandigarh (IXC) — more airlines (IndiGo, Air India, SpiceJet, Vistara), more frequencies, cheaper fares. Then take a cab or Volvo bus to Manali (280 km, 7-8 hours). The drive via Mandi and the Beas River valley is one of the most scenic road journeys in India.

By Road from Delhi
Delhi to Manali is approximately 535 km (12-14 hours by road). Options:
- Volvo AC bus: ₹1,200–1,800 (HRTC or private operators). Overnight buses depart from ISBT Kashmere Gate around 5-6 PM, arriving Manali by morning. The most popular budget option.
- Private cab: ₹5,000–8,000 one-way for a sedan, ₹8,000–12,000 for an SUV. Best for families or groups of 4+.
- Self-drive: Via NH44 to Chandigarh, then NH3 to Manali. Great drive but tiring — break it with an overnight stop in Mandi or Kullu.
By Train
No direct train to Manali. Nearest stations are Joginder Nagar (163 km) and Chandigarh (280 km). From either, you'll need a cab or bus to complete the journey. The Chandigarh route is more practical for most travellers.
Places to Visit in Manali
Old Manali
If Mall Road Manali is the tourist centre, Old Manali is where the character lives. A 3 km uphill walk (or ₹100 auto ride) from the main town takes you to narrow lanes lined with cafes, bakeries, Israeli restaurants, and guesthouses with mountain views. This is where backpackers and long-stay travellers gravitate. Lazy Days Cafe, Drifters' Inn, and the riverside restaurants are Manali's soul.
Pro tip: Stay in Old Manali, not Mall Road. The vibe is completely different — quieter, cooler (literally and figuratively), and closer to nature.
Rohtang Pass (3,978m)
The headline attraction. A high mountain pass connecting Kullu Valley with Lahaul-Spiti, Rohtang offers snow even in summer, dramatic views of the Pir Panjal range, and adventure activities like skiing and snowboarding.
Critical information:
- Open: Typically mid-May to October (exact date depends on snow clearance by BRO)
- Permit required: Online permit via the Manali district administration website. Limited to ~1,200 vehicles per day (diesel and petrol separately). Book 2-3 weeks in advance during peak season — permits sell out.
- Distance: 51 km from Manali, 2-hour drive
- Start early: Leave by 5-6 AM to avoid traffic and afternoon cloud cover
- Cost: Permit ₹550 per person + vehicle charge. Snow activities (skiing, tube rides) are ₹500–1,500 extra.
Solang Valley
13 km from Manali, Solang Valley is the adventure hub. Paragliding (₹1,500–3,000), zorbing, zip-lining, and in winter, skiing. The Solang Ropeway takes you up to 2,560m for panoramic views. Unlike Rohtang, Solang doesn't require a permit and is accessible year-round.
Can you do Rohtang and Solang in one day? Technically yes, but it's rushed and exhausting. Better to dedicate a full day to each.
Hadimba Temple
A 16th-century wooden temple dedicated to Hadimba Devi, set in a cedar forest. The architecture is distinctive — a pagoda-style structure that's unlike any other Hindu temple. It's a 15-minute walk from Mall Road and worth the visit, but go early morning to avoid the crowds and selfie chaos.
Vashisht Village & Hot Springs
A small village 3 km from Manali with natural sulphur hot springs (free entry) and ancient stone temples. The hot spring bath after a cold mountain day is therapeutic. The village also has cafes and shops with Kullu Valley views.
Atal Tunnel (Rohtang Tunnel)
The world's longest highway tunnel above 10,000 feet — 9.02 km cutting through the Pir Panjal range, connecting Manali to Lahaul-Spiti. Opened in 2020, it's both an engineering marvel and a practical gateway. If Rohtang Pass is closed (or you want to skip the permit hassle), the Atal Tunnel gets you to the other side in 10 minutes instead of 5 hours.
Beas River
The river running through Manali is the backdrop to everything. River rafting on the Beas (Grade II-III rapids, ₹500–1,500 for a 14 km stretch from Pirdi to Jhiri) is one of the best adventure activities. Even if you don't raft, walking along the river through pine forests is Manali at its most peaceful.
Naggar Castle & Roerich Art Gallery
20 km south of Manali, Naggar Castle is a 500-year-old stone and wood fortress with stunning views of the Kullu Valley. The Nicholas Roerich Art Gallery nearby displays works by the Russian painter who lived here for decades. A quieter, more cultured day trip away from the Manali crowds.

Practical Tips
- Book Rohtang permits early. The online system opens ~1 month before the pass opens. Slots fill up fast in May-June. Don't assume you'll get a same-week permit.
- Carry cash. ATMs exist in Manali town but are unreliable in peak season (long queues, machines running out). UPI works at most shops in Mall Road and Old Manali but not at remote locations like Rohtang or Solang.
- Pack layers. Manali at 2,050m is pleasant during the day (15-25°C in summer) but cold at night (5-10°C). Rohtang at 3,978m is freezing even in June — carry a proper jacket.
- Avoid peak weekends. If possible, visit Tuesday-Thursday instead of Friday-Sunday. The difference in crowd levels at Solang and Mall Road is dramatic.
- Altitude sickness isn't a concern in Manali (2,050m is manageable), but Rohtang at 3,978m can cause mild headache and breathlessness. Stay hydrated and don't overexert.
- Leh highway tip: If you're considering extending to Leh-Ladakh, the Manali-Leh highway opens around mid-May. But this is a 2-day drive at minimum and requires separate planning. Don't try to add Ladakh as an "afterthought" to a Manali trip.
Manali for Couples & Honeymooners
Manali is India's most popular honeymoon destination for a reason. The combination of snow views, cosy cafes, adventure activities, and riverside walks hits every romantic note. Stay in Old Manali (quieter, more intimate), take a private cab to Solang and Rohtang (not shared buses), and book a river-view room at one of the boutique properties in Prini or Haripur.
