Rameshwaram Temple 2026: Complete Darshan, 22 Sacred Wells & Travel Guide — How to Reach from India & Abroad

Rameshwaram is where two of Hinduism’s most sacred pilgrimages converge: it is one of the four Char Dhams and home to one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. According to the Ramayana, Lord Rama worshipped Shiva here to seek absolution after the battle of Lanka — and established the sacred Shiva Lingam that devotees still worship today. But what makes Rameshwaram truly unique is the ritual of bathing in 22 sacred wells (Theerthams) inside the temple — each believed to wash away specific sins — followed by darshan in the longest temple corridor in India, with over 1,200 magnificently carved pillars. The temple sits on Pamban Island, connected to mainland India by the spectacular Pamban Bridge — India’s first sea bridge. Whether you’re coming from Madurai, flying in from Delhi, or traveling from abroad, this guide covers everything for your 2026 pilgrimage.

About Ramanathaswamy Temple

The Arulmigu Ramanathaswamy Temple is one of the most ancient and revered temples in India. The name “Ramanathaswamy” means “The Master of Rama” — since Lord Rama himself worshipped Lord Shiva here, Shiva is addressed as Rama’s Lord. The temple complex covers over 15 acres with a 126-foot East Gopuram (Rajagopuram) rising in nine tiers. The temple’s corridors — the longest in any Hindu temple — stretch for over 1,200 metres with intricately carved granite pillars, creating a breathtaking perspective that seems to stretch to infinity.

It is believed that Rama, after defeating Ravana (who was a great Shiva devotee), wanted to atone for the sin of killing a Brahmin. He sent Hanuman to bring a Lingam from Kailash, but when Hanuman was delayed, Sita fashioned a Lingam from sand — this is the main Lingam worshipped today. The Lingam brought by Hanuman (Vishwalingam) is also installed nearby and tradition holds that devotees should worship Hanuman’s Lingam first.

The temple houses a rare Spatika Lingam (crystal Lingam) brought by Rama himself, visible only during the early morning Spatika Darshan (5–6 AM).

The 22 Sacred Wells (Theerthams)

The most unique ritual at Rameshwaram — and one found at no other temple in India — is the 22 Theertham Snana (sacred well bath). Inside the temple complex are 22 wells (out of 64 Theerthams in and around the island), each believed to have specific spiritual and healing properties. The 22 wells represent the 22 arrows in Lord Rama’s quiver.

How it works: You purchase a ticket (₹25) at the counter inside the temple. A temple attendant (paricharak) guides you to each well in sequence, drawing water with a bucket and pouring it over you. Each well’s water is believed to cure different ailments and wash away different sins. The entire ritual takes 45–90 minutes.

What to know: You will be drenched from head to toe — carry an extra set of dry clothes. Changing areas (separate for men and women, basic dividers) are available near the well exit. You must change into dry clothes before entering the main sanctum for darshan. The water temperature varies between wells — some are surprisingly warm, others cold.

Recommended sequence: 1) Agni Theertham (holy dip in the sea at the beach near the temple, before entering). 2) 22 Theertham Snana inside the temple. 3) Change into dry clothes. 4) Main deity darshan (Ramanathaswamy + Parvatavardhini). This is the traditional complete pilgrimage sequence.

How to Reach Rameshwaram

By Train (Most Iconic Way)

Rameswaram Railway Station (RMM) is just 1–1.5 km from the temple (auto ₹30–50, walkable). The train journey to Rameshwaram is one of the most spectacular in India — the train crosses the Pamban Bridge, India’s first sea bridge at 2.06 km, with the ocean on both sides. Book a window seat. Book on IRCTC.

From Chennai: Rameswaram Express (16713) — overnight, ~12 hours. Sethu Express. Daily services.

Places to Visit in Rameshwaram

Agni Theertham: The sacred beach adjacent to the temple. Pilgrims take a holy dip here before entering the temple. Gentle waves, more like a river than a sea. The starting point of the traditional pilgrimage sequence.

Dhanushkodi: A haunting ghost town at the island’s southeastern tip, destroyed by a cyclone in 1964. The ruins, turquoise waters, and the point where the Bay of Bengal meets the Indian Ocean create an unforgettable landscape. This is also believed to be the starting point of Ram Setu (Adam’s Bridge) — the mythical bridge to Sri Lanka. Shared jeeps from Rameshwaram: ₹100–150 per person. 20 km from the temple.

Pamban Bridge: India’s first sea bridge (railway, 2.06 km) and the parallel road bridge. Watching a train cross the bridge from the road bridge is a spectacular sight.

Gandamadana Parvatham: A small hillock with a mandapam housing the footprints of Lord Rama. Panoramic views of the island.

Panchamukhi Hanuman Temple: Near the main temple. A five-faced Hanuman idol considered very powerful. Quick visit after main darshan.

APJ Abdul Kalam Memorial: A museum dedicated to India’s beloved former President, who was born in Rameshwaram. Well-maintained, inspiring, and worth 30–45 minutes.

Practical Tips

Carry extra clothes: Essential for the 22 wells ritual. You will be completely drenched. Pack at least one extra set in a waterproof bag.

Arrive by 4:30 AM: This gives you time for Spatika Lingam darshan (5–6 AM), Agni Theertham dip, 22 wells bath, and main darshan all before the afternoon crowd builds.

No phones inside: Mobile phones, cameras, and electronic devices are prohibited inside the temple. Leave them at your hotel or deposit at lockers outside (which takes time).

Dress code: Traditional Indian attire. Men: dhoti/formal pants. Women: saree/salwar kameez. No Western wear inside. Shirts must be removed before entering the inner sanctum.

Dhanushkodi is a must: The ghost town and Ram Setu viewpoint are as memorable as the temple itself. Budget 2–3 hours. Go in the morning for the best light.

Pamban Bridge window seat: If arriving by train, book a window seat for the Pamban Bridge crossing. The 2-minute ride over open ocean is one of Indian Railways’ most iconic experiences.

Combine trips: Rameshwaram + Madurai Meenakshi Temple (170 km) + Kanyakumari (320 km) makes the classic 4–5 day South India pilgrimage circuit. Add Tiruvannamalai for a complete Pancha Bhoota Sthalam trail.
