University of Otago
Travel guide for Indian students — Dunedin, New Zealand. Nearest international gateway: DUD (Dunedin).
the University of Otago is a popular choice for Indian students in Dunedin.
Getting around Dunedin
Dunedin is a compact, walkable student town built around the campus, with city buses on a Bee Card (student concession); the famous 'flatting' scene is right by the university, so most students walk or cycle.
From the airport to campus
Dunedin Airport (DUD) is about 30 minutes from the city by airport shuttle or taxi; most students fly in via Auckland, Wellington or Christchurch. A taxi from DUD to the centre is roughly NZD 90-100 (a shared shuttle is cheaper).
When to book flights
Most NZ programs start in late February (with a mid-year July intake); book 8-12 weeks ahead from your nearest Indian metro - flights route via Southeast Asian or Australian hubs - and compare live carriers above.
Visiting your child at the University of Otago means flying into Dunedin (DUD), almost always connecting via Auckland, Wellington or Christchurch. Plan the NZ Visitor Visa well ahead - New Zealand is not in Schengen and Indians cannot use the NZeTA waiver.

Visitor visa for parents
New Zealand runs its own visa system - Indian citizens are not eligible for the NZeTA visa waiver and must apply for a Visitor Visa before travelling. It is applied for online via Immigration New Zealand (an eVisa - no sticker). The general Visitor Visa allows a stay of up to 6 months (multiple-entry) or 9 months (single-entry), max 9 months in any 18. For longer or repeat family stays, parents can instead use the dedicated Parent and Grandparent Visitor Visa.
- Apply online at immigration.govt.nz - it is an eVisa linked to the passport, with no physical sticker.
- New Zealand is NOT in Schengen and Indians cannot use the NZeTA waiver - a full Visitor Visa is required.
- For longer or repeat stays, the Parent and Grandparent Visitor Visa (child/grandchild sponsors) gives up to 18 months over 3 years.
- Build a strong file: bank statements, a return ticket or funds for one, and clear ties to India; an invitation letter from your child helps.
Just admitted to the University of Otago? Here's your arrival checklist.
Arrival checklist
- Book your flight to Dunedin (DUD), connecting via Auckland, Wellington or Christchurch.
- Airport shuttle/taxi from DUD to the city (~30 min); the campus is walkable from most flats.
- Dunedin has NZ's most famous student flatting scene - sort housing early and check flats are well heated for the cold winters.
- Take out student health insurance (e.g. StudentSafe, ~NZD 700/year - it is a visa condition), open an NZ bank account and get an IRD number to work, and pack for NZ's changeable weather.
Dunedin, a historic city in the deep south, is New Zealand's classic student town and among the most affordable - about NZD 1,400-1,700 a month all-in sharing and cooking. Built around the University of Otago (the country's oldest), it has an intense, social student culture, a compact walkable centre and dramatic Scottish-heritage architecture; winters are cold, so budget for heating.
Monthly cost of living in Dunedin (a student estimate)
That's roughly NZ$16,500-21,000 a year for living costs, on top of tuition.
Finding accommodation
'Flatting' - renting a room in a shared house - is the norm and the cheapest option; first-year students often start in university halls of residence. Start early via the university accommodation office, TradeMe Property and local flatting groups, and never pay a deposit (bond) before a signed tenancy and a viewing.
- Line up a hall place or flat early - the start of the academic year (Feb) is the tightest time.
- Rent is usually quoted per week in NZ - multiply by ~4.3 for the monthly figure.
- Dunedin has NZ's most famous student 'flatting' scene right by campus; winters are cold, so check that flats are well insulated and heated.
Working part-time
On a student visa you can work up to 25 hours per week during the academic term (this rose from 20 to 25 hours on 3 November 2025) and full-time during scheduled breaks, provided your course runs at least one academic year (120 credits, two semesters); master's-by-research and PhD students have no hour limit. After finishing you can apply, before your student visa expires, for a Post Study Work Visa: a bachelor's degree or postgraduate qualification (NZQCF level 7 or higher) earns an open work visa - any employer, any job, typically up to three years - while a non-degree qualification only allows work related to what you studied. You need to show genuine access to at least NZD 5,000 in funds when you apply.
