Arizona State University - Campus Immersion
Travel guide for Indian students — Tempe, United States. Nearest international gateway: PHX (Phoenix).
Arizona State University (ASU) is one of the largest public universities in the US, based in Tempe in the Phoenix metro, and a major destination for Indian graduate students - especially in engineering, computer science, business and technology. Its Campus Immersion programs are the in-person, on-campus track.
ASU's Tempe campus is about 6-10 miles from Phoenix Sky Harbor International (PHX), the international gateway. The Valley Metro light rail links the airport (via the free PHX Sky Train) directly to campus.
ASU has one of the largest Indian graduate communities in the US, heavily concentrated in the Fulton Schools of Engineering, computer science and business. The light rail tie-in from Sky Harbor makes arrival easy and cheap.
Light rail from Sky Harbor (PHX)
From PHX, take the free PHX Sky Train to the 44th St/Washington station, then the Valley Metro light rail east to the Tempe campus stops (Veterans Way/College Ave or University Dr/Rural Rd) - about 37 minutes for ~$2-4. A taxi is only ~$18-23 since the airport is close.
Getting around the Phoenix metro
Valley Metro light rail and buses connect Tempe, downtown Phoenix and Mesa, and ASU offers discounted transit passes. The Tempe campus also has free Orbit neighbourhood buses, and the campus is walkable and bike-friendly.
When to book flights
Fares from India peak around the August fall intake. Book 6-10 weeks ahead and compare carriers from your nearest metro above.
Visiting your child at ASU means flying into Phoenix Sky Harbor International (PHX), about 6-10 miles from the Tempe campus, with a light rail link. Plan the US visitor visa well ahead.

Visitor visa for parents
Indian parents need a B1/B2 visitor visa. First-time interview waits are long and vary sharply by consulate, so city choice matters - you may book at ANY US consulate in India, not just your home city.
- Plan 8-12 months ahead, especially for graduation - graduations do NOT qualify for emergency/expedited appointments.
- You can book at any consulate in India; many families fly to Chennai to save months versus Mumbai or Delhi.
- The dropbox (interview waiver) window shrank from 48 to 12 months in 2025 - most parents with older expired visas now need a full interview.
- Visitor stays are up to 6 months per visit, set by the officer at entry on the I-94.
Just admitted to ASU? Most Indian students enter on an F-1 academic visa (DS-160 fee $185 + SEVIS I-901 fee $350). J-1 is for exchange programs (SEVIS $220), M-1 for vocational study. Spouses/children come on F-2/J-2/M-2 dependent visas. You can enter the US up to 30 days before your program start date. For Fall 2026, Indian F-1 applicants must interview at one of five US consulates in India.
Arrival checklist
- Book your flight into Phoenix Sky Harbor International (PHX) - ~6-10 miles from the Tempe campus.
- From PHX, the free Sky Train to the light rail gets you to campus for ~$2-4; a taxi is only ~$18-23.
- Once enrolled, get a discounted Valley Metro transit pass for light rail and buses.
- Confirm student baggage allowance with your airline.
- Carry your I-20, SEVIS receipt and financial documents in hand luggage for US immigration.
The Phoenix/Tempe area is mid-priced and a major Indian-student hub thanks to ASU - plan on about $1,500-2,200 a month all-in sharing and cooking, with shared rooms around $700-1,100. The desert catch is summer electricity: air-conditioning bills climb steeply from May to September, so budget more for utilities in those months. The Valley Metro light rail runs right through the ASU Tempe campus, and ASU's U-Pass makes it cheap.
Monthly cost of living in Tempe (a student estimate)
That's roughly $17,000-26,000 a year for living costs, on top of tuition.
Finding accommodation
Tempe rent has risen with ASU demand but stays below the coasts. Most students share apartments near campus or on the light rail; ASU housing is simplest first year.
- The Valley Metro light rail runs through ASU Tempe - live near a stop and use the discounted ASU U-Pass.
- Tempe's free Orbit neighbourhood shuttles connect housing to campus and transit.
- Budget extra for summer AC (May-Sept) - desert electricity bills spike.
Working part-time
On an F-1 visa you can work on-campus up to 20 hours/week during term (full-time in breaks). Off-campus work needs authorization - CPT during study, OPT after (up to 12 months, +24 for STEM degrees). You cannot freelance or work off-campus without approval.
Safety & student support
Tempe and the Phoenix metro student areas are generally safe; use normal awareness at night and watch for heat safety in summer.
- ASU runs security escorts, a safety app and night shuttles - use them after dark.
- The Tempe campus area is busy and student-friendly; the wider metro is car-oriented and spread out.
- Summer heat is a real safety factor - carry water, avoid midday sun, and never leave anyone/anything in a parked car.
Indian community & food
The Phoenix metro has a large, fast-growing Indian community (many around ASU and the East Valley) with plenty of groceries, temples and restaurants.
Indian grocery stores
- India Plaza and Indian Grocers across Tempe and Chandler - the East Valley desi hub near ASU.
- Sizzle India and Apna Bazar-type stores in the Chandler/Gilbert area.
- Everyday staples easy to find along the Tempe light-rail corridor by campus.
Student community
- ASU has one of the largest Indian/South Asian student communities in the US, with major Diwali/Holi events.
- Chandler and the East Valley host big Indian cultural festivals and several Hindu temples.
- Extensive Indian dining in Tempe, Chandler and across the East Valley.
