Trine University - Phoenix - AZ Education Center
Travel guide for Indian students — Tempe, United States. Nearest international gateway: PHX (Phoenix).
Trine University's Phoenix Education Center is a graduate education center in the Phoenix metro, offering hybrid master's programs - including the MBA, MS in Engineering Management, MS in Information Services and MS in Business Analytics - on the same model as Trine's long-running Detroit center. It serves working and international graduate students in the region.
The center is in the Phoenix/Tempe area, within about a mile of three Valley Metro light rail stops and roughly a 10-minute drive from Phoenix Sky Harbor International (PHX), the international gateway.
Trine's Phoenix center delivers career-focused, hybrid graduate degrees (business, engineering management, IT, analytics) rather than a traditional residential campus - similar to its established Detroit education center. It is built around accessibility to the Phoenix metro's transit and employers.
Close to Sky Harbor (PHX)
The center is only about a 10-minute drive from Phoenix Sky Harbor International (PHX), and within roughly a mile of three Valley Metro light rail stations - so a taxi/rideshare or the light rail both work from the airport.
A graduate education center
Like Trine's Detroit center, this is a hybrid-program location offering personal attention and small classes, not a residential undergraduate campus. Plan your own housing in the Phoenix/Tempe area near a light rail line.
Getting around
Valley Metro light rail and buses connect the center to Tempe, downtown Phoenix and Mesa. The nearby light rail stops make it easy to reach without a car.
Visiting your child at Trine's Phoenix center means flying into Phoenix Sky Harbor International (PHX), about a 10-minute drive away. Plan the US visitor visa well ahead.
Getting from PHX to campus
Visitor visa for parents
Indian parents need a B1/B2 visitor visa. First-time interview waits are long and vary sharply by consulate, so city choice matters - you may book at ANY US consulate in India, not just your home city.
- Plan 8-12 months ahead, especially for graduation - graduations do NOT qualify for emergency/expedited appointments.
- You can book at any consulate in India; many families fly to Chennai to save months versus Mumbai or Delhi.
- The dropbox (interview waiver) window shrank from 48 to 12 months in 2025 - most parents with older expired visas now need a full interview.
- Visitor stays are up to 6 months per visit, set by the officer at entry on the I-94.
Just admitted to Trine's Phoenix Education Center? Most Indian students enter on an F-1 academic visa (DS-160 fee $185 + SEVIS I-901 fee $350). J-1 is for exchange programs (SEVIS $220), M-1 for vocational study. Spouses/children come on F-2/J-2/M-2 dependent visas. You can enter the US up to 30 days before your program start date. For Fall 2026, Indian F-1 applicants must interview at one of five US consulates in India. Note this is a graduate education center (hybrid programs), not a residential campus.
Arrival checklist
- Book your flight into Phoenix Sky Harbor International (PHX) - about a 10-minute drive from the center.
- From PHX, a taxi/rideshare or the nearby Valley Metro light rail both reach the center.
- Plan your own housing in the Phoenix/Tempe area, ideally near a light rail line.
- Confirm student baggage allowance with your airline.
- Carry your I-20, SEVIS receipt and financial documents in hand luggage for US immigration.
The Phoenix/Tempe area is mid-priced and a major Indian-student hub thanks to ASU - plan on about $1,500-2,200 a month all-in sharing and cooking, with shared rooms around $700-1,100. The desert catch is summer electricity: air-conditioning bills climb steeply from May to September, so budget more for utilities in those months. The Valley Metro light rail runs right through the ASU Tempe campus, and ASU's U-Pass makes it cheap.
Monthly cost of living in Tempe (a student estimate)
That's roughly $17,000-26,000 a year for living costs, on top of tuition.
Finding accommodation
Tempe rent has risen with ASU demand but stays below the coasts. Most students share apartments near campus or on the light rail; ASU housing is simplest first year.
- The Valley Metro light rail runs through ASU Tempe - live near a stop and use the discounted ASU U-Pass.
- Tempe's free Orbit neighbourhood shuttles connect housing to campus and transit.
- Budget extra for summer AC (May-Sept) - desert electricity bills spike.
Working part-time
On an F-1 visa you can work on-campus up to 20 hours/week during term (full-time in breaks). Off-campus work needs authorization - CPT during study, OPT after (up to 12 months, +24 for STEM degrees). You cannot freelance or work off-campus without approval.
Safety & student support
Tempe and the Phoenix metro student areas are generally safe; use normal awareness at night and watch for heat safety in summer.
- ASU runs security escorts, a safety app and night shuttles - use them after dark.
- The Tempe campus area is busy and student-friendly; the wider metro is car-oriented and spread out.
- Summer heat is a real safety factor - carry water, avoid midday sun, and never leave anyone/anything in a parked car.
Indian community & food
The Phoenix metro has a large, fast-growing Indian community (many around ASU and the East Valley) with plenty of groceries, temples and restaurants.
Indian grocery stores
- India Plaza and Indian Grocers across Tempe and Chandler - the East Valley desi hub near ASU.
- Sizzle India and Apna Bazar-type stores in the Chandler/Gilbert area.
- Everyday staples easy to find along the Tempe light-rail corridor by campus.
Student community
- ASU has one of the largest Indian/South Asian student communities in the US, with major Diwali/Holi events.
- Chandler and the East Valley host big Indian cultural festivals and several Hindu temples.
- Extensive Indian dining in Tempe, Chandler and across the East Valley.
