University of California - San Diego
Travel guide for Indian students — La Jolla, United States. Nearest international gateway: SAN (San Diego).
The University of California, San Diego (UCSD) is a top public research university in La Jolla, on the coast north of downtown San Diego. It has a strong international community and is popular with Indian students in engineering, computer science, data science and the biological sciences.
San Diego International (SAN) is about 14 miles from the La Jolla campus, 20-30 minutes by car. Since 2021 the Blue Line Trolley runs directly to campus, giving UCSD a clean transit link from the airport.
UCSD in La Jolla has a large Indian graduate community in the Jacobs School of Engineering, CSE and the data-science programs. The Mid-Coast Blue Line Trolley extension (opened 2021) connects campus directly to the regional transit network.
From SAN airport to campus
There is no single direct bus, but a clean transit route exists: take the free San Diego Flyer electric shuttle from the airport to Old Town Transit Center (every 20-30 min), then the Blue Line Trolley directly to the UC San Diego campus stations. A taxi is about $40-50 for the ~14-mile trip; rideshare is similar.
Getting around with U-Pass
UCSD students can ride the Blue Line Trolley and selected MTS bus routes free with a U-Pass sticker from the Transportation Office, plus free campus Triton Transit shuttles. FlixBus offers student discounts for trips around California.
When to book flights
Book 6-10 weeks ahead of the August intake for the best fares; compare carriers from your nearest metro above.
Visiting your child at UCSD means flying into San Diego International (SAN), about 14 miles from the La Jolla campus. Plan the US visitor visa well ahead.
Getting from SAN to campus
Visitor visa for parents
Indian parents need a B1/B2 visitor visa. First-time interview waits are long and vary sharply by consulate, so city choice matters - you may book at ANY US consulate in India, not just your home city.
- Plan 8-12 months ahead, especially for graduation - graduations do NOT qualify for emergency/expedited appointments.
- You can book at any consulate in India; many families fly to Chennai to save months versus Mumbai or Delhi.
- The dropbox (interview waiver) window shrank from 48 to 12 months in 2025 - most parents with older expired visas now need a full interview.
- Visitor stays are up to 6 months per visit, set by the officer at entry on the I-94.
Just admitted to UCSD? Most Indian students enter on an F-1 academic visa (DS-160 fee $185 + SEVIS I-901 fee $350). J-1 is for exchange programs (SEVIS $220), M-1 for vocational study. Spouses/children come on F-2/J-2/M-2 dependent visas. You can enter the US up to 30 days before your program start date. For Fall 2026, Indian F-1 applicants must interview at one of five US consulates in India.

San Diego offers California city life at a lower rent than LA or the Bay Area - about $1,700-2,500 a month all-in sharing and cooking. The local rule of thumb: each mile away from La Jolla or the College Area can knock $50-150 off your monthly rent, and the San Diego Trolley makes living further out workable. Signing a lease in February rather than July gets the cheapest shared rooms.
Monthly cost of living in La Jolla (a student estimate)
That's roughly $20,000-30,000 a year for living costs, on top of tuition.
Finding accommodation
San Diego rent varies sharply by area (College Area cheap, La Jolla pricey). Most students share apartments or take UCSD housing first year.
- Each mile out of La Jolla/College Area can save $50-150/mo in rent - the trolley extends your options.
- Sign early (Feb, not July) for the cheapest shared rooms near campus.
- Get a PRONTO card for the San Diego Trolley and buses.
Working part-time
On an F-1 visa you can work on-campus up to 20 hours/week during term (full-time in breaks). Off-campus work needs authorization - CPT during study, OPT after (up to 12 months, +24 for STEM degrees). You cannot freelance or work off-campus without approval.
Safety & student support
San Diego is generally safe with a mild, outdoorsy culture; use normal awareness at night and research the specific neighbourhood.
- UCSD and SDSU run security escorts, shuttles and safety apps - use them after dark.
- The campus areas (La Jolla, College Area) are student-friendly; beaches and downtown draw crowds.
- Property crime is the main issue - don't leave valuables visible in parked cars.
Indian community & food
San Diego has a sizeable Indian community, with groceries and restaurants around the university areas and in the northern suburbs.
Indian grocery stores
- Indian grocers clustered on Miramar Rd and Mira Mesa Blvd - the city's main desi area, near UCSD.
- Surati Farsan and other South Asian stores in the Mira Mesa area for sweets and snacks.
- Smaller Indian markets near SDSU's College Area for everyday staples.
