Fly into JFK - and the UNH shuttle

The University of New Haven advises international students to arrive at New York's JFK (~75 miles), the most convenient airport for international arrivals. For new students it offers a discounted shuttle (the GO Airport Shuttle of Connecticut) from JFK directly to campus or partner housing during the arrival window - book at least 6 days ahead. Do not take a taxi from a New York airport; it can cost several hundred dollars.

Other airports and the train

Tweed New Haven (HVN, ~7 miles) is closest but only has limited domestic flights (Avelo/Breeze). Hartford Bradley (BDL, ~57 miles), LaGuardia (~69 miles) and Newark (EWR, ~105 miles) are alternatives. Amtrak runs from Newark airport to New Haven Union Station, a short ride from West Haven.

Getting around

New Haven-area CT Transit buses and the nearby Metro-North and Shore Line East trains (from New Haven Union Station) connect West Haven to the region and New York. The campus area is compact.

J-1 is for exchange programs (SEVIS $220), M-1 for vocational study. Spouses/children come on F-2/J-2/M-2 dependent visas. You can enter the US up to 30 days before your program start date. For Fall 2026, Indian F-1 applicants must interview at one of five US consulates in India. The university recommends arriving at New York's JFK.
