The University of Tampa (UT) is a private university on a riverfront campus in downtown Tampa, known for business, marine science, communications and its international student body. Its landmark Plant Hall sits along the Hillsborough River, minutes from the city centre.
UT's downtown campus is only about 7 miles from Tampa International (TPA), the international gateway - one of the shortest airport-to-campus trips in this guide, around 15 minutes by road.
The University of Tampa has a notable international community across the Sykes College of Business, marine science and communications, on a compact downtown campus close to Tampa's job market and waterfront.

Visitor visa for parents
Indian parents need a B1/B2 visitor visa. First-time interview waits are long and vary sharply by consulate, so city choice matters - you may book at ANY US consulate in India, not just your home city.
- Plan 8-12 months ahead, especially for graduation - graduations do NOT qualify for emergency/expedited appointments.
- You can book at any consulate in India; many families fly to Chennai to save months versus Mumbai or Delhi.
- The dropbox (interview waiver) window shrank from 48 to 12 months in 2025 - most parents with older expired visas now need a full interview.
- Visitor stays are up to 6 months per visit, set by the officer at entry on the I-94.
Just admitted to the University of Tampa? Most Indian students enter on an F-1 academic visa (DS-160 fee $185 + SEVIS I-901 fee $350). J-1 is for exchange programs (SEVIS $220), M-1 for vocational study. Spouses/children come on F-2/J-2/M-2 dependent visas. You can enter the US up to 30 days before your program start date. For Fall 2026, Indian F-1 applicants must interview at one of five US consulates in India.

Tampa is an affordable, fast-growing Florida city - about $1,400-2,000 a month all-in sharing and cooking, with shared rooms around $650-1,100. Florida has no state income tax, a quiet plus once you work on-campus or move to OPT. Transit (HART buses) is limited and the metro is car-oriented, so many students share rides or keep an inexpensive car; housing near USF or downtown shortens the commute.
Monthly cost of living in Tampa (a student estimate)
That's roughly $16,000-24,000 a year for living costs, on top of tuition.
Finding accommodation
Tampa is affordable by US standards. Most students share apartments near USF or downtown; on-campus housing is simplest first year.
- Florida has no state income tax - a small but real benefit when you work on-campus or do OPT.
- HART buses are limited and Tampa is spread out - many students share rides or keep a cheap car.
- Living near USF or downtown cuts both commute time and transport cost.
Working part-time
On an F-1 visa you can work on-campus up to 20 hours/week during term (full-time in breaks). Off-campus work needs authorization - CPT during study, OPT after (up to 12 months, +24 for STEM degrees). You cannot freelance or work off-campus without approval.
Safety & student support
The Tampa student and suburban areas are generally safe; use normal big-city awareness at night and research the specific neighbourhood.
- USF and the University of Tampa run security escorts, shuttles and safety apps - use them after dark.
- The campus areas and northern suburbs are well-regarded; parts of the urban core need more caution at night.
- Florida heat and summer storms are worth planning around; the metro is car-oriented, so arrange transport in advance.
