About University of Florida

The University of Florida (UF) is a top public research university in Gainesville, in north-central Florida, and one of the most popular US destinations for Indian students in engineering, computer science, business and the sciences. It is a flagship of the State University System of Florida.

UF's airport picture is a multi-airport choice. Gainesville Regional (GNV) is just ~5 miles from campus and connects via Atlanta (Delta) and Charlotte/Dallas/Miami (American). For some itineraries, Orlando (MCO, ~2 hrs) or Jacksonville (JAX, ~84 mi) are larger alternatives reached by coach.

UF has one of the largest Indian student communities in the southeast, concentrated in engineering, CS and the sciences. Because Gainesville is a mid-sized city, choosing your airport and ground connection matters.

Three ways in - which to choose

GNV (Gainesville Regional) is only ~5 miles / 15 min from campus and takes connecting flights via ATL, CLT, DFW and MIA - the most convenient if fares work. Otherwise fly into Orlando (MCO, ~2 hrs) or Jacksonville (JAX, ~84 mi) and take a RedCoach luxury coach or shuttle to Gainesville.

Free RTS bus from the airport

New international students can ride RTS (Regional Transit System) bus number 25 free from Gainesville airport by showing their admission letter or I-20. With the Gator 1 card, students ride all RTS city buses free - UF has no separate campus bus system, it uses RTS.

When to book flights

Compare a connecting flight into GNV against flying into MCO/JAX plus a coach - sometimes the bigger hub plus coach is cheaper overall. Book 6-10 weeks ahead of the August intake.

Visiting your child at UF? Gainesville Regional (GNV) is closest at ~5 miles with connecting flights; Orlando (MCO) and Jacksonville (JAX) are larger airports ~2 hrs and ~84 mi away reached by coach. Plan the US visitor visa well ahead.

Visitor visa for parents

Indian parents need a B1/B2 visitor visa. First-time interview waits are long and vary sharply by consulate, so city choice matters - you may book at ANY US consulate in India, not just your home city.

Chennai (fastest) ~1 month
Kolkata ~2.5 months
New Delhi ~6.5-8 months
Hyderabad ~7.5-8 months
Mumbai (longest) ~9.5-10 months
MRV visa fee $185 (~Rs.15,500)
  • Plan 8-12 months ahead, especially for graduation - graduations do NOT qualify for emergency/expedited appointments.
  • You can book at any consulate in India; many families fly to Chennai to save months versus Mumbai or Delhi.
  • The dropbox (interview waiver) window shrank from 48 to 12 months in 2025 - most parents with older expired visas now need a full interview.
  • Visitor stays are up to 6 months per visit, set by the officer at entry on the I-94.

Just admitted to UF? Most Indian students enter on an F-1 academic visa (DS-160 fee $185 + SEVIS I-901 fee $350). J-1 is for exchange programs (SEVIS $220), M-1 for vocational study. Spouses/children come on F-2/J-2/M-2 dependent visas. You can enter the US up to 30 days before your program start date. For Fall 2026, Indian F-1 applicants must interview at one of five US consulates in India. Gainesville's GNV airport is ~5 miles from campus; MCO/JAX are larger hubs reached by coach.

Arrival checklist

  • Decide your route: a connecting flight into GNV (~5 mi from campus) or MCO/JAX plus a RedCoach coach.
  • On arrival at GNV, ride RTS bus 25 free by showing your admission letter or I-20.
  • Once enrolled, ride all RTS city buses free with your Gator 1 card.
  • Confirm student baggage allowance with your airline.
  • Carry your I-20, SEVIS receipt and financial documents in hand luggage for US immigration.

Gainesville, home to the University of Florida, is an affordable Florida college town - about $1,300-1,800 a month all-in sharing and cooking, with student rooms often $700-1,100. Florida has no state income tax, a quiet plus for OPT later, and UF students ride RTS buses free with a Gator ID, so the walkable, bike-friendly town rarely needs a car.

Monthly cost of living in Gainesville (a student estimate)

Rent - room in a shared flat $600-1,000
Rent - on-campus housing $800-1,300
Food & groceries $260-430
Utilities + internet $140-250

That's roughly $15,000-21,000 a year for living costs, on top of tuition.

Finding accommodation

Gainesville is a college town built around the University of Florida, so most students share apartments or houses near campus, or take university housing for the first year.

  • the University of Florida students ride RTS buses free with a valid ID.
  • near campus / Midtown keeps you within walking or biking distance of campus - off-campus leases there go fast.
  • Being a college town, most daily needs are close to campus; factor in occasional travel to the nearest city/airport.

Working part-time

On an F-1 visa you can work on-campus up to 20 hours/week during term (full-time in breaks). Off-campus work needs authorization - CPT during study, OPT after (up to 12 months, +24 for STEM degrees). You cannot freelance or work off-campus without approval.

Safety & student support

Gainesville is a relatively small, student-centred town and generally safe by US standards; still use normal awareness at night.

  • the University of Florida runs security escorts, safety apps and (often) night shuttles - save the campus safety number.
  • The campus and near campus / Midtown areas are walkable and student-dense.
  • Stick to well-lit, well-travelled routes at night; small-town crime is low but not zero.

Indian community & food

Gainesville has an active Indian student community centred on the University of Florida. UF's large international cohort supports a steady desi presence in town.

Indian grocery stores

  • India Bazaar (3550 SW 34th St) and Deshi Bazaar (4110 SW 34th St) - desi grocers on the SW 34th St corridor near UF.
  • Swagat Indian Grocery for spices, frozen foods and sweets.
  • Orlando/Tampa (~2 hrs) for large Indian supermarkets on an occasional bulk run.

Student community

  • the University of Florida has an active Indian/South Asian student association running major Diwali/Holi events.
  • Larger Indian communities and temples are in Orlando/Tampa (~2 hrs) for bigger events.
  • Indian restaurants in Gainesville catering to the student community, with more in the nearest city.
