About Georgia Institute of Technology

Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) is a top US public research university in Midtown Atlanta, world-renowned for engineering, computer science and the sciences, and a leading destination for Indian graduate students drawn by its programs and Atlanta's tech and corporate hub.

Georgia Tech is in Midtown Atlanta, about 12 miles north of Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International (ATL) - the world's busiest airport and the international gateway. MARTA rail connects the airport directly to campus.

Georgia Tech has a very large Indian graduate community across the College of Computing, engineering and the sciences, in a city that is a major tech and corporate centre. The direct rail link from the airport makes arrival simple.

MARTA rail from the airport

From Hartsfield-Jackson (ATL), take MARTA's Red or Gold Line north from the airport station (inside the domestic terminal) to North Avenue Station, a roughly 15-minute walk to campus - about a 20-25 minute ride for ~$2.50-3 with a Breeze Card. Georgia Tech's international office recommends MARTA; a taxi is a flat ~$32.

Getting around Atlanta

MARTA rail and bus serve Midtown and the wider city; North Avenue and Midtown stations both sit by campus, and buses 1, 26 and 12 stop at the campus edges. Pay with the reusable Breeze Card. The Midtown campus is walkable.

When to book flights

Fares from India peak around the August fall intake. Book 6-10 weeks ahead and compare carriers from your nearest metro above.

Visiting your child at Georgia Tech means flying into Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International (ATL), about 12 miles south of campus, with a direct MARTA rail link. Plan the US visitor visa well ahead.

Visitor visa for parents

Indian parents need a B1/B2 visitor visa. First-time interview waits are long and vary sharply by consulate, so city choice matters - you may book at ANY US consulate in India, not just your home city.

Chennai (fastest) ~1 month
Kolkata ~2.5 months
New Delhi ~6.5-8 months
Hyderabad ~7.5-8 months
Mumbai (longest) ~9.5-10 months
MRV visa fee $185 (~Rs.15,500)
  • Plan 8-12 months ahead, especially for graduation - graduations do NOT qualify for emergency/expedited appointments.
  • You can book at any consulate in India; many families fly to Chennai to save months versus Mumbai or Delhi.
  • The dropbox (interview waiver) window shrank from 48 to 12 months in 2025 - most parents with older expired visas now need a full interview.
  • Visitor stays are up to 6 months per visit, set by the officer at entry on the I-94.

Just admitted to Georgia Tech? Most Indian students enter on an F-1 academic visa (DS-160 fee $185 + SEVIS I-901 fee $350). J-1 is for exchange programs (SEVIS $220), M-1 for vocational study. Spouses/children come on F-2/J-2/M-2 dependent visas. You can enter the US up to 30 days before your program start date. For Fall 2026, Indian F-1 applicants must interview at one of five US consulates in India.

Arrival checklist

  • Book your flight into Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International (ATL) - ~12 miles from campus.
  • From ATL, take MARTA (Red/Gold Line) to North Avenue Station, a short walk to campus (~$2.50-3 with a Breeze Card).
  • Once enrolled, use MARTA rail and buses to get around Midtown and Atlanta.
  • Confirm student baggage allowance with your airline.
  • Carry your I-20, SEVIS receipt and financial documents in hand luggage for US immigration.

Atlanta is an affordable major city and a big Southern hub for Indian students - about $1,500-2,200 a month all-in sharing and cooking. The local detail worth knowing: MARTA rail runs from the airport straight through Midtown by Georgia Tech, so students near a station can skip a car, though the metro is spread out enough that many still keep one. Decatur's Patel Plaza anchors the desi community.

Monthly cost of living in Atlanta (a student estimate)

Rent - room in a shared flat $700-1,200
Rent - on-campus housing $900-1,500
Food & groceries $280-460
MARTA monthly (Breeze Card) $95
Utilities + internet $140-260
Mobile phone $40
Realistic monthly total (sharing, cooking) $1,500-2,200

That's roughly $17,000-26,000 a year for living costs, on top of tuition.

Finding accommodation

Atlanta is affordable for a major city. Most students share apartments near Georgia Tech (Midtown) or on a MARTA line.

  • MARTA rail/bus serves Midtown and the airport; a Breeze Card covers it cheaply.
  • Midtown puts you near Georgia Tech and is walkable - living on a MARTA line reduces car need.
  • Atlanta is spread out - many students still keep a car for areas MARTA doesn't reach.

Working part-time

On an F-1 visa you can work on-campus up to 20 hours/week during term (full-time in breaks). Off-campus work needs authorization - CPT during study, OPT after (up to 12 months, +24 for STEM degrees). You cannot freelance or work off-campus without approval.

Safety & student support

Atlanta is generally safe in the campus and main residential areas (Midtown); use normal big-city awareness at night and research by neighbourhood.

  • Georgia Tech runs security escorts (Stingerette), shuttles and safety apps - use them after dark.
  • Midtown around Georgia Tech is busy and well-populated; safety varies across the wider city.
  • Stick to well-lit, well-travelled routes at night; the metro is spread out so plan transport.

Indian community & food

Atlanta has one of the largest Indian communities in the US South, centred on the suburbs (notably Decatur's 'Patel Plaza' and the northern suburbs).

Indian grocery stores

  • Patel Plaza in Decatur - a desi shopping plaza anchored by Patel Brothers, the metro's main hub.
  • Cherians International and Indian Spices across the northern suburbs (Gwinnett, Alpharetta).
  • Desi grocers along the MARTA corridor for students near Midtown.

Student community

  • Georgia Tech has a large Indian/South Asian student community with major Diwali/Holi events.
  • The northern suburbs host big Indian cultural festivals and several Hindu temples.
  • Extensive Indian dining in Decatur and the northern suburbs.
