Visiting your child at Northwestern means flying into O'Hare (ORD), about 17 miles from the Evanston campus. Chicago has two airports: O'Hare (ORD), where most international flights from India arrive, and Midway (MDW), mostly domestic. The CTA runs the 'L' trains (Blue Line from O'Hare, Orange Line from Midway) and buses; Metra commuter rail and Pace suburban buses cover the wider region. Pay with the Ventra app or card. Indian parents need a B1/B2 visitor visa. First-time interview waits are long and vary sharply by consulate, so city choice matters - you may book at ANY US consulate in India, not just your home city.

• Plan 8-12 months ahead, especially for graduation - graduations do NOT qualify for emergency/expedited appointments.
• You can book at any consulate in India; many families fly to Chennai to save months versus Mumbai or Delhi.
• The dropbox (interview waiver) window shrank from 48 to 12 months in 2025 - most parents with older expired visas now need a full interview.
• Visitor stays are up to 6 months per visit, set by the officer at entry on the I-94.

Just admitted to Northwestern? Most Indian students enter on an F-1 academic visa (DS-160 fee $185 + SEVIS I-901 fee $350). J-1 is for exchange programs (SEVIS $220), M-1 for vocational study. Spouses/children come on F-2/J-2/M-2 dependent visas. You can enter the US up to 30 days before your program start date. For Fall 2026, Indian F-1 applicants must interview at one of five US consulates in India.

Chicago is the value pick among big US cities - around $1,700-2,500 a month all-in sharing and cooking, well below the coasts for comparable city life. The trade-off is winter: heating bills climb in older walk-ups from December to March, so factor that in. The CTA 'L' is excellent, so almost no student needs a car. Neighbourhoods like Rogers Park and Pilsen stretch the budget furthest.

Finding accommodation

Chicago offers better value than New York or the coasts. Most students share apartments on a CTA line or take university housing first year.

• Neighbourhoods like Rogers Park and Pilsen are cheaper while staying on the 'L'.
• Chicago winters are harsh - budget a little more for heating in older buildings.

Working part-time

On an F-1 visa you can work on-campus up to 20 hours/week during term (full-time in breaks). Off-campus work needs authorization - CPT during study, OPT after (up to 12 months, +24 for STEM degrees). You cannot freelance or work off-campus without approval.

Safety & student support

Chicago is a large city where safety varies sharply by neighbourhood. Student and campus areas are generally fine, but research the specific area and use normal big-city awareness, especially at night.

• Campuses (UChicago, Northwestern, UIC) run security escorts, shuttle services and safety apps - UChicago's is especially extensive in Hyde Park.
• Stick to well-travelled routes and the 'L' during normal hours; use rideshare late at night.
• Check crime patterns by neighbourhood rather than judging the whole city - student areas differ a lot from the citywide statistics.

Indian community & food

Chicago has a large Indian community, anchored by Devon Avenue ('Little India') on the North Side - groceries, sweets, restaurants and clothing all on one strip.

• Devon Avenue in West Rogers Park - Chicago's historic 'Little India': the original Patel Brothers plus dozens of grocers and sweet shops.
• Indian Garden and Fresh Farms-type grocers in the suburbs (Schaumburg, Naperville, Skokie).
• Spices and staples easy to find near Hyde Park and Evanston for everyday cooking.

Student community

• UChicago, Northwestern and UIC all have active Indian/South Asian student associations and large Diwali/Holi events.
• Devon Avenue is the cultural centre for festivals, food and shopping.
