About University of Illinois - Urbana-Champaign

The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) is a top public research university and one of the most popular US destinations for Indian students, especially in computer science, engineering and data science. It sits in the twin cities of Champaign-Urbana in central Illinois.

Two airports - which to use

Willard (CMI) is right by campus (~15 min) with American Airlines flights connecting via O'Hare and Dallas - the most hassle-free option if fares work. Most international students fly into O'Hare (ORD), ~2.5 hours north, which is the practical international gateway.

Getting from O'Hare to campus

From O'Hare the popular options are the Peoria Charter or Illini Shuttle coach buses, which pick up at the airport terminals and drop at multiple Champaign-Urbana points including the Illinois Terminal (~3.5 hrs, ~$45-70). Amtrak runs from Chicago Union Station to Champaign. The UI Ride intercampus shuttle also connects Urbana-Champaign and Chicago.

Getting around campus

The MTD (Champaign-Urbana Mass Transit District) buses are free for students with an i-card and cover campus and the twin cities thoroughly. A taxi from Willard to campus is just $15-20.

Visiting your child at UIUC? The practical international gateway is Chicago O'Hare (ORD), ~2.5 hours north; the campus airport Willard (CMI) is ~15 min away if you can connect there. Plan the US visitor visa well ahead.

Visitor visa for parents

Indian parents need a B1/B2 visitor visa. First-time interview waits are long and vary sharply by consulate, so city choice matters - you may book at ANY US consulate in India, not just your home city.

Chennai (fastest) ~1 month
Kolkata ~2.5 months
New Delhi ~6.5-8 months
Hyderabad ~7.5-8 months
Mumbai (longest) ~9.5-10 months
MRV visa fee $185 (~Rs.15,500)
  • Plan 8-12 months ahead, especially for graduation - graduations do NOT qualify for emergency/expedited appointments.
  • You can book at any consulate in India; many families fly to Chennai to save months versus Mumbai or Delhi.
  • The dropbox (interview waiver) window shrank from 48 to 12 months in 2025 - most parents with older expired visas now need a full interview.
  • Visitor stays are up to 6 months per visit, set by the officer at entry on the I-94.

Just admitted to UIUC? Most Indian students enter on an F-1 academic visa (DS-160 fee $185 + SEVIS I-901 fee $350). J-1 is for exchange programs (SEVIS $220), M-1 for vocational study. Spouses/children come on F-2/J-2/M-2 dependent visas. You can enter the US up to 30 days before your program start date. For Fall 2026, Indian F-1 applicants must interview at one of five US consulates in India. Most India flights arrive at Chicago O'Hare (ORD), ~2.5 hrs from campus.

Arrival checklist

  • Book your international flight into Chicago O'Hare (ORD); consider an American Airlines connection into Willard (CMI) for the last leg.
  • From O'Hare, pre-book a Peoria Charter or Illini Shuttle coach to Champaign-Urbana (~$45-70).
  • Once enrolled, ride MTD buses free with your i-card.
  • Confirm student baggage allowance with your airline.
  • Carry your I-20, SEVIS receipt and financial documents in hand luggage for US immigration.

With one of the largest Indian student populations in the US, the twin cities have a genuinely strong desi grocery and food scene for their size. UIUC students ride the excellent MTD bus network free, so a car is optional.
