Purdue University - West Lafayette
Travel guide for Indian students — West Lafayette, United States. Nearest international gateway: IND (Indianapolis).
Purdue University's West Lafayette campus is a top US public research university, world-renowned for engineering, computer science, agriculture and the sciences, and one of the most popular destinations for Indian students - it has the fourth-largest international student population of any US university.
Indianapolis International (IND), about 70 miles south, is the practical international gateway for Purdue. Frequent shuttles - Lafayette Limo and Reindeer Shuttle - connect IND directly to the West Lafayette campus. Chicago's airports are a more distant alternative.
Purdue has one of the very largest Indian graduate communities in the US, heavily concentrated in engineering, computer science and the sciences. Because campus is ~70 miles from Indianapolis, planning the airport shuttle is the key arrival step.
Shuttle from Indianapolis (IND)
Lafayette Limo and Reindeer Shuttle both run between Indianapolis International (IND) and the Purdue campus roughly every two hours, dropping near the Purdue Memorial Union - about a 1.5-hour trip for ~$25-37 one-way. Pre-book, especially around move-in and breaks. A taxi/rideshare from IND is much pricier (~$120-150).
Chicago airports as an alternative
Chicago O'Hare (ORD) and Midway (MDW) are about 2.5-3 hours away; Express Air Coach runs a shuttle between O'Hare and Purdue. Indianapolis is closer and usually simpler for the last leg. Amtrak's Cardinal Line also stops in Lafayette, a few minutes from campus.
Getting around campus
Greater Lafayette's CityBus serves campus and the twin cities (free or low-cost for Purdue students), and the compact campus is very walkable, with Veo e-scooters and bikes widely available.
Visiting your child at Purdue means flying into Indianapolis International (IND), about 70 miles south, then taking a shuttle to West Lafayette. Chicago (ORD) is a more distant alternative. Plan the US visitor visa well ahead.
Getting from IND to campus
Visitor visa for parents
Indian parents need a B1/B2 visitor visa. First-time interview waits are long and vary sharply by consulate, so city choice matters - you may book at ANY US consulate in India, not just your home city.
- Plan 8-12 months ahead, especially for graduation - graduations do NOT qualify for emergency/expedited appointments.
- You can book at any consulate in India; many families fly to Chennai to save months versus Mumbai or Delhi.
- The dropbox (interview waiver) window shrank from 48 to 12 months in 2025 - most parents with older expired visas now need a full interview.
- Visitor stays are up to 6 months per visit, set by the officer at entry on the I-94.
Just admitted to Purdue? Most Indian students enter on an F-1 academic visa (DS-160 fee $185 + SEVIS I-901 fee $350). J-1 is for exchange programs (SEVIS $220), M-1 for vocational study. Spouses/children come on F-2/J-2/M-2 dependent visas. You can enter the US up to 30 days before your program start date. For Fall 2026, Indian F-1 applicants must interview at one of five US consulates in India. Fly into Indianapolis (IND), ~70 miles south, and take a shuttle to West Lafayette.
