Lawrence Technological University
Travel guide for Indian students — Southfield, United States. Nearest international gateway: DTW (Detroit).
Lawrence Technological University (LTU) is a private university in Southfield, a Detroit suburb, founded in 1932 and focused on engineering, architecture, design, technology and management. It has a hands-on, career-oriented culture and a notable international student community.
LTU's Southfield campus is near major highways, about 45 minutes from Detroit Metro (DTW), the international gateway, and just minutes from Detroit itself.
LTU is a technology-focused university - strong in engineering, architecture and design - in the northern Detroit suburbs, with industry ties across the metro region. Its location near major highways keeps the rest of Detroit close.
From DTW to campus
Detroit Metro (DTW) is about 45 minutes from the Southfield campus by road. A taxi or rideshare is the most direct option with luggage. SMART regional buses serve the Southfield/Detroit corridor for local travel, though transit from the airport involves transfers.
Getting around the Detroit metro
LTU sits near major highways (close to the Northwestern Highway / 10 Mile area), making the campus easy to reach by car. The SMART bus network covers the surrounding suburbs and downtown Detroit.
When to book flights
Book 6-10 weeks ahead of the August intake; compare carriers from your nearest metro above.
Visiting your child at LTU means flying into Detroit Metro (DTW), about 45 minutes from the Southfield campus. Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW) is the international gateway - a major Delta hub with the McNamara and Evans/North terminals. Southeast Michigan's SMART buses and, for Ann Arbor, the Michigan Flyer/AirRide coach serve the region; rideshare and taxis are widely available. Plan the US visitor visa well ahead.

Visitor visa for parents
Indian parents need a B1/B2 visitor visa. First-time interview waits are long and vary sharply by consulate, so city choice matters - you may book at ANY US consulate in India, not just your home city.
- Plan 8-12 months ahead, especially for graduation - graduations do NOT qualify for emergency/expedited appointments.
- You can book at any consulate in India; many families fly to Chennai to save months versus Mumbai or Delhi.
- The dropbox (interview waiver) window shrank from 48 to 12 months in 2025 - most parents with older expired visas now need a full interview.
- Visitor stays are up to 6 months per visit, set by the officer at entry on the I-94.
Just admitted to LTU? Most Indian students enter on an F-1 academic visa (DS-160 fee $185 + SEVIS I-901 fee $350). J-1 is for exchange programs (SEVIS $220), M-1 for vocational study. Spouses/children come on F-2/J-2/M-2 dependent visas. You can enter the US up to 30 days before your program start date. For Fall 2026, Indian F-1 applicants must interview at one of five US consulates in India.
Arrival checklist
- Book your flight into Detroit Metro (DTW) - ~45 min from the Southfield campus.
- From DTW, a taxi/rideshare or pre-booked car service is the simplest arrival.
- Use the SMART bus network for local travel around the Detroit metro once settled.
- Confirm student baggage allowance with your airline.
- Carry your I-20, SEVIS receipt and financial documents in hand luggage for US immigration.
Metro Detroit is one of the most affordable US study destinations - often $1,300-1,900 a month all-in, with shared rooms as low as $500-900 in the suburbs. The catch is transit: the metro is car-oriented with limited buses, so most students share rides or buy an inexpensive used car. The upside is that the Indian-heavy suburbs (Troy, Canton, Novi) are affordable, safe and close to groceries.
Monthly cost of living in Southfield (a student estimate)
That's roughly $15,000-23,000 a year for living costs, on top of tuition.
Finding accommodation
The Detroit metro is affordable by US standards. Most international students share apartments or houses in the suburbs near campus; on-campus housing is the simplest first-year route.
- Detroit is car-oriented with limited transit - many students share rides or buy an inexpensive used car.
- The Indian-heavy suburbs (Troy, Canton, Novi, Farmington Hills) are popular, safe and close to groceries.
- Budget extra for winter heating; Michigan winters are cold.
Working part-time
On an F-1 visa you can work on-campus up to 20 hours/week during term (full-time in breaks). Off-campus work needs authorization - CPT during study, OPT after (up to 12 months, +24 for STEM degrees). You cannot freelance or work off-campus without approval.
Safety & student support
Safety in the Detroit metro varies a lot - the suburbs where most students live (Troy, Canton, Dearborn, Ann Arbor) are generally safe and quiet, while parts of the city centre need more caution.
- Campuses (UM-Dearborn, Lawrence Tech, Wayne State) run security and escort services - use them at night.
- The northern/western suburbs popular with Indian students are well-regarded for safety.
- Use normal awareness downtown and after dark; the metro is spread out, so plan transport in advance.
Indian community & food
Metro Detroit has a very large Indian community concentrated in the suburbs (Troy, Canton, Novi, Farmington Hills), with abundant groceries, temples and restaurants.
Indian grocery stores
- Patel Brothers (5055 Rochester Rd, Troy) - the metro's biggest desi supermarket, in the Indian-heavy north suburbs.
- India Grocers and desi stores across Canton, Novi (Grand River Ave) and Farmington Hills.
- Indian grocers near UM-Dearborn and the Plymouth Rd corridor for everyday staples.
Student community
- UM (Ann Arbor/Dearborn), Lawrence Tech and Wayne State have active Indian/South Asian student groups.
- The Troy/Canton suburbs host large Diwali and Holi events and several Hindu temples (e.g. the Bharatiya Temple, Troy).
- Extensive Indian dining in Troy, Canton, Novi and Farmington Hills.
