About Cornell University

Cornell University is an Ivy League research university in Ithaca, in New York's Finger Lakes region, world-renowned for engineering, computer science, agriculture, hotel administration and the sciences. It has a large international graduate community, including many Indian students.

Cornell's location makes airport choice the key arrival decision. Ithaca Tompkins (ITH) is just 10 minutes from campus but small; Syracuse Hancock (SYR) is ~60 miles / 75-90 min and larger; many international students fly into a New York City airport (JFK/LGA/EWR) and take a bus to Ithaca.

Cornell has a strong Indian graduate community across Cornell Engineering, computing and information science, and the agricultural and life sciences. Because Ithaca is remote, planning your airport and ground connection matters more here than at most schools.

Three ways in - which to choose

ITH (Ithaca Tompkins) is only 10 min from campus and now has direct flights to JFK (Delta) and Washington Dulles (United), so you can fly the final leg in - TCAT Route 32 links it to campus. SYR (Syracuse) is ~60 miles / 75-90 min with more flight options. Many international students fly into a NYC airport, then take Cornell's Campus-to-Campus bus or Shortline/OurBus to Ithaca (about 4-5 hours).

Free student airport shuttle

Cornell's Student Assembly funds a free airport shuttle to both ITH and SYR around breaks, with campus pickup points at RPCC and Bakers Flagpole - register in advance. From SYR you can otherwise use Ithaca Airline Limousine (~$80 one-way) or a taxi.

Getting around Ithaca

TCAT (Tompkins Consolidated Area Transit) buses are the cheapest way around Cornell and Ithaca, with routes across campus and town. The Cornell Campus-to-Campus bus runs express service between Ithaca and Cornell's NYC campus.

Visiting your child at Cornell? Ithaca Tompkins (ITH) is closest at 10 min but small; Syracuse (SYR) is ~60 miles; many fly into NYC and bus up. Plan the US visitor visa well ahead.

Visitor visa for parents

Indian parents need a B1/B2 visitor visa. First-time interview waits are long and vary sharply by consulate, so city choice matters - you may book at ANY US consulate in India, not just your home city.

Chennai (fastest) ~1 month
Kolkata ~2.5 months
New Delhi ~6.5-8 months
Hyderabad ~7.5-8 months
Mumbai (longest) ~9.5-10 months
MRV visa fee $185 (~Rs.15,500)
  • Plan 8-12 months ahead, especially for graduation - graduations do NOT qualify for emergency/expedited appointments.
  • You can book at any consulate in India; many families fly to Chennai to save months versus Mumbai or Delhi.
  • The dropbox (interview waiver) window shrank from 48 to 12 months in 2025 - most parents with older expired visas now need a full interview.
  • Visitor stays are up to 6 months per visit, set by the officer at entry on the I-94.

Just admitted to Cornell? Most Indian students enter on an F-1 academic visa (DS-160 fee $185 + SEVIS I-901 fee $350). J-1 is for exchange programs (SEVIS $220), M-1 for vocational study. Spouses/children come on F-2/J-2/M-2 dependent visas. You can enter the US up to 30 days before your program start date. For Fall 2026, Indian F-1 applicants must interview at one of five US consulates in India. Ithaca is remote, so plan your airport connection carefully.

Arrival checklist

  • Decide your route: a connecting flight into ITH (10 min from campus), SYR (~60 mi), or a NYC airport + bus.
  • Register for Cornell's free student airport shuttle (to ITH or SYR) if your arrival lines up with break dates.
  • From SYR, book Ithaca Airline Limousine (~$80) in advance; from NYC, the Campus-to-Campus or Shortline bus.
  • Confirm student baggage allowance with your airline.
  • Carry your I-20, SEVIS receipt and financial documents in hand luggage for US immigration.

Ithaca, home to Cornell, is a scenic but somewhat pricey upstate college town - about $1,500-2,100 a month all-in sharing and cooking, higher than most Midwest college towns because housing is tight in a small, remote market. The upside: Cornell students ride TCAT buses free with an ID, and Collegetown sits right by campus, so a car is rarely needed.

Monthly cost of living in Ithaca (a student estimate)

Rent - room in a shared flat $800-1,300
Rent - on-campus housing $900-1,500
Food & groceries $280-450
Utilities + internet $140-250
Mobile phone $40
Realistic monthly total (sharing, cooking) $1,500-2,100

That's roughly $18,000-25,000 a year for living costs, on top of tuition.

Finding accommodation

Ithaca is a college town built around Cornell University, so most students share apartments or houses near campus, or take university housing for the first year.

  • Cornell University students ride TCAT buses free with a valid ID.
  • Collegetown keeps you within walking or biking distance of campus - off-campus leases there go fast.
  • Being a college town, most daily needs are close to campus; factor in occasional travel to the nearest city/airport.

Working part-time

On an F-1 visa you can work on-campus up to 20 hours/week during term (full-time in breaks). Off-campus work needs authorization - CPT during study, OPT after (up to 12 months, +24 for STEM degrees). You cannot freelance or work off-campus without approval.

Safety & student support

Ithaca is a relatively small, student-centred town and generally safe by US standards; still use normal awareness at night.

  • Cornell University runs security escorts, safety apps and (often) night shuttles - save the campus safety number.
  • The campus and Collegetown areas are walkable and student-dense.
  • Stick to well-lit, well-travelled routes at night; small-town crime is low but not zero.

Indian community & food

Ithaca has an active Indian student community centred on Cornell University. Cornell's large international community keeps a strong desi presence in this small town.

Indian grocery stores

  • Collegetown Mini Mart & Spice Center - an Indian grocer right in Collegetown by Cornell.
  • Asian markets near Collegetown stock many Indian spices and staples.
  • For a big shop, students drive to Syracuse (~1 hr) where the selection is wider.

Student community

  • Cornell University has an active Indian/South Asian student association running major Diwali/Holi events.
  • Nearby cities (Syracuse) host larger Indian cultural events and temples.
  • Indian restaurants in Ithaca catering to the student community, with more in the nearest city.
