Pennsylvania State University - University Park
Travel guide for Indian students — University Park, United States. Nearest international gateway: SCE (State College).
Penn State University Park is the flagship campus of Pennsylvania State University, in State College ('Happy Valley') in central Pennsylvania, popular with Indian students in engineering, computer science, business and the sciences. It is one of the largest research universities in the US.
Penn State has its own airport - State College Regional / University Park Airport (SCE), just 5 miles / 10 minutes from campus, with non-stop flights to Philadelphia (PHL), Chicago (ORD) and Washington Dulles (IAD). For international students, SCE is the recommended final destination via a connection through those hubs.
Penn State has a large Indian graduate community across the College of Engineering, computer science, Smeal business and the sciences. Because State College is in central Pennsylvania, your airport connection matters - but the campus airport makes it simpler than most remote schools.
Fly into University Park (SCE)
State College Regional / University Park Airport (SCE) is only 5 miles (a 10-minute taxi or rideshare) from campus, with non-stop service to Philadelphia (PHL), Chicago O'Hare (ORD) and Washington Dulles (IAD). Penn State recommends making SCE your final destination - connect through one of those hubs from your international flight.
Driving-in alternatives
If fares into SCE are high, Harrisburg International (MDT) is about 90 miles / 1.5 hours away (Fullington Trailways buses and rental cars connect it to State College), and Philadelphia (PHL) is ~190 miles. Most international students prefer the SCE connection for simplicity.
Getting around State College
State College is a compact college town; the CATA bus system serves campus and town, and the campus itself is walkable. A taxi or rideshare covers the short hop from SCE.
Visiting your child at Penn State? University Park Airport (SCE) is just 5 miles from campus with connections via PHL/ORD/IAD; Harrisburg (MDT, ~90mi) is a drive-in alternative. Plan the US visitor visa well ahead.

Visitor visa for parents
Indian parents need a B1/B2 visitor visa. First-time interview waits are long and vary sharply by consulate, so city choice matters - you may book at ANY US consulate in India, not just your home city.
- Plan 8-12 months ahead, especially for graduation - graduations do NOT qualify for emergency/expedited appointments.
- You can book at any consulate in India; many families fly to Chennai to save months versus Mumbai or Delhi.
- The dropbox (interview waiver) window shrank from 48 to 12 months in 2025 - most parents with older expired visas now need a full interview.
- Visitor stays are up to 6 months per visit, set by the officer at entry on the I-94.
Just admitted to Penn State University Park? Most Indian students enter on an F-1 academic visa (DS-160 fee $185 + SEVIS I-901 fee $350). J-1 is for exchange programs (SEVIS $220), M-1 for vocational study. Spouses/children come on F-2/J-2/M-2 dependent visas. You can enter the US up to 30 days before your program start date. For Fall 2026, Indian F-1 applicants must interview at one of five US consulates in India. Make University Park Airport (SCE) your final destination, connecting via PHL, ORD or IAD.
