About University of Wisconsin - Madison

The University of Wisconsin-Madison is the flagship public research university of Wisconsin, strong in engineering, computer science, business and the sciences, and a popular destination for Indian graduate students. Its campus sits on the shore of Lake Mendota in the state capital.

UW-Madison's campus is in Madison, about 5-7 miles from Dane County Regional Airport (MSN), the gateway airport, roughly 13-15 minutes by road.

UW-Madison has a large Indian graduate community across the College of Engineering, computer science, the business school and the sciences, in a scenic, student-friendly capital city. The airport is close and easy.

From MSN to campus

Dane County Regional Airport (MSN) is only 5-7 miles from campus, about 13-15 minutes. A taxi is ~$25; Madison Metro Transit buses run from near the airport to the campus area for ~$2 (about 30 minutes). Rideshare is widely available.

Milwaukee as an alternative

For more flight options, Milwaukee Mitchell (MKE, ~85 miles) is an alternative, with Badger Bus running several daily express trips between the Milwaukee airport and downtown Madison. MSN is far simpler when fares work.

Getting around Madison

Madison Metro Transit buses serve the city and campus (students ride with a UW pass), and the campus along Lake Mendota is walkable and very bike-friendly. Most daily needs are within easy reach.

Visiting your child at UW-Madison means flying into Dane County Regional Airport (MSN), about 5-7 miles from campus. Plan the US visitor visa well ahead.

Visitor visa for parents

Indian parents need a B1/B2 visitor visa. First-time interview waits are long and vary sharply by consulate, so city choice matters - you may book at ANY US consulate in India, not just your home city.

Chennai (fastest) ~1 month
Kolkata ~2.5 months
New Delhi ~6.5-8 months
Hyderabad ~7.5-8 months
Mumbai (longest) ~9.5-10 months
MRV visa fee $185 (~Rs.15,500)
  • Plan 8-12 months ahead, especially for graduation - graduations do NOT qualify for emergency/expedited appointments.
  • You can book at any consulate in India; many families fly to Chennai to save months versus Mumbai or Delhi.
  • The dropbox (interview waiver) window shrank from 48 to 12 months in 2025 - most parents with older expired visas now need a full interview.
  • Visitor stays are up to 6 months per visit, set by the officer at entry on the I-94.

Just admitted to UW-Madison? Most Indian students enter on an F-1 academic visa (DS-160 fee $185 + SEVIS I-901 fee $350). J-1 is for exchange programs (SEVIS $220), M-1 for vocational study. Spouses/children come on F-2/J-2/M-2 dependent visas. You can enter the US up to 30 days before your program start date. For Fall 2026, Indian F-1 applicants must interview at one of five US consulates in India.

Arrival checklist

  • Book your flight into Dane County Regional Airport (MSN) - ~5-7 miles from campus.
  • From MSN, a taxi (~$25) is simplest; Madison Metro buses are the budget option (~$2).
  • Milwaukee (MKE, ~85 mi) + Badger Bus is an alternative for more flight choices.
  • Confirm student baggage allowance with your airline.
  • Carry your I-20, SEVIS receipt and financial documents in hand luggage for US immigration.

Madison, Wisconsin's capital and home to UW-Madison, is moderately priced - about $1,600-2,200 a month all-in sharing and cooking, cheaper than Chicago or the coasts. UW students get a free Madison Metro bus pass and the lakeside campus is famously bike-friendly, so a car is optional. The trade-off is the long, cold winter - factor in extra heating.
