Munich, Germany
Munich Airport (MUC), named after Franz Josef Strauss, opened in 1992 and is operated by Flughafen München GmbH. It is the second-busiest airport in Germany and one of the busiest in Europe, handling approximately 47.9 million passengers in 2019.
The airport serves as a major hub for Lufthansa and other Star Alliance members. Future expansion plans include a possible third runway, although this project has faced local opposition.
Munich Airport has two main passenger terminals, Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, and a smaller satellite terminal connected to Terminal 2 via an underground personal transportation system. Terminal 1 handles both domestic and international flights and is divided into five modules: A, B, C, D, and E.
It has 108 gates. Terminal 2 primarily handles Lufthansa and Star Alliance flights, with 75 gates.
The satellite terminal adds 27 additional gates. The total capacity of Munich Airport is approximately 50 million passengers per year.
In 2016, the satellite terminal was opened, increasing the airport's capacity.
